History. Sanilac County was created September 10, 1822 and fully organized December 31, 1849. It was probably named for a Wyandot (Huron) chief named Sanilac. Lexington was the original county seat, chosen in 1848. Lumberman and landholder Wildman Mills arrived in the 1860s, built a sawmill and a general store, served as postmaster, and platted the town, naming it after Sandusky, Ohio, which local accounts say his own father had named. September 5, 1881: the Thumb Fire swept the region, burning more than a million acres in under a day and killing 282 people across four counties. Sandusky was among the settlements consumed. 1877: county voters approved moving the seat from Lexington to the more centrally located Sandusky. The move took effect in 1879, and a new courthouse, a two-story Victorian building designed by Julius Hess, was ready by 1880. 1885: incorporated as a village. By 1900 two rail lines served the town, the Pere Marquette and the Detroit, Bay City & Western, moving lumber, grain and passengers to Detroit and Flint. 1887: the village name was changed to Sanilac Centre, because the town sits at the exact center of Sanilac County. July 24, 1905: incorporated as a city, and the name reverted to Sandusky. By 1910, agriculture had replaced logging as the primary economic driver as cleared forest gave way to wheat, sugar beets, corn and beans.

Culture and community. The Original Country Christmas Lighted Farm Implement Parade, billed as "Michigan's Original," runs the first weekend of December. The 31st annual edition was held December 6-7, 2024, with five judged divisions (farm-related businesses, non-farm businesses, service or nonprofit organizations, religious, and community), lineup at 3 p.m., judging at 6 p.m., and the parade rolling at 7 p.m. from Sandusky High School out to M-19 and M-46 and back. The Sanilac County Fair, started in 1866, fills the fairgrounds on N. Dawson Street in August with 30-plus exhibition departments, more than 600 exhibitors, more than 1,300 competition classes, a rodeo, truck and tractor pulls, carnival rides and seven nights of grandstand entertainment.
