Santa Clarita is a fast-growing city about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, formed in 1987 by uniting the four communities of Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, and Canyon Country. Known as one of the safest cities in Los Angeles County, it blends master-planned suburbia with a century-old Hollywood filming legacy and the record-breaking roller coasters of Six Flags Magic Mountain. About Santa Clarita
Also known as. The Thrill Capital of the World (via Six Flags Magic Mountain). Awesometown (city marketing slogan). one of "little Santa Clara" (origin of the name).
History. Spanish explorers named the Santa Clara River for Saint Clare of Assisi; the valley became known as "little Santa Clara," or Santa Clarita, to distinguish it from Santa Clara in Northern California. Henry Mayo Newhall purchased the Rancho San Francisco in the 1870s; after his death his heirs formed the Newhall Land and Farming Company (1883), which developed Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, and Canyon Country. On March 12, 1928, the nearby St. Francis Dam collapsed just before midnight, killing an estimated 431 people in what is often called California's worst engineering disaster. In December 1987 the four communities incorporated as the City of Santa Clarita - at the time the largest area ever to incorporate in California - with about 110,000 residents; the population has since grown to roughly 230,000.
Local economy. Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park, which opened May 29, 1971, is the city's single largest employer. The city is a major Hollywood production center, with numerous sound stages and ranches drawing film and TV work back from Los Angeles. Master-planned development by the historic Newhall Land and Farming Company shaped the local real-estate and retail economy across Valencia and its neighboring communities. Its location on Interstate 5 north of Los Angeles supports logistics, retail, and a large commuter and business base.
Culture and community. Deep filmmaking heritage dating to the early 1900s, when stars like William S. Hart, Tom Mix, Harry Carey, and a young John Wayne worked in the area. The Walk of Western Stars in Newhall honors screen legends with bronze plaques, with new inductees added each spring during the Cowboy Festival. Festivals include the Santa Clarita Cowboy Festival (bluegrass, Western music, and chuckwagon fare), the Santa Clarita International Film Festival, Concerts in the Park, and the SENSES block party. The Netflix comedy series "Santa Clarita Diet" took its name and setting from the city.
What makes Santa Clarita distinct. The city is really four towns in one - Valencia, Newhall, Saugus, and Canyon Country - and residents typically say which community they are from rather than "Santa Clarita." Vasquez Rocks has stood in for so many alien planets in Star Trek that it is one of the most recognizable rock formations in science-fiction film. The 1928 St. Francis Dam collapse just outside the valley remains one of the deadliest civil-engineering failures in American history. Its name is a Spanish diminutive - literally "little Santa Clara" - coined only to avoid confusion with the older Northern California city of Santa Clara.
