Sheboygan is a Lake Michigan port city and county seat known nationwide as the self-proclaimed 'Bratwurst Capital of the World.' German immigrants built a furniture-making 'Chair City' in the 1800s, and the area is still home to the Kohler Company and Johnsonville. It is also a surprising surf town, the 'Malibu of the Midwest,' and hosts world-class golf at nearby Whistling Straits.

About Sheboygan
Also known as. Bratwurst Capital of the World. Malibu of the Midwest. Chair City. City of Cheese, Chairs, Children & Churches.
History. Established as a fur-trading post in 1818 by William Farnsworth and settled as a lumbering village in 1835, on land long home to Potawatomi, Chippewa, Ottawa, Ho-Chunk, and Menominee peoples. Incorporated as a city on March 19, 1853. German immigrants arriving in the 1840s and 1850s built a large furniture and chair industry, earning the 'Chair City' nickname. In 1898 Sheboygan elected the first two Socialist candidates to public office in America. Named the 'Bratwurst Capital of the World' in 1970 after a rivalry with Bucyrus, Ohio.
Local economy. Kohler Company, founded in 1873 and headquartered in the adjacent village of Kohler, a global maker of plumbing fixtures. Johnsonville, the bratwurst company founded in the county in 1945. Other major employers include Sargento, Acuity Insurance, Bemis, and Vollrath. A furniture-manufacturing legacy behind the 'Chair City' identity.
Culture and community. The Sheboygan bratwurst tradition: a 'double' (two sausages) on a buttered semmel hard roll with stone-ground mustard, raw onion, pickle, and ketchup. Locals grill brats over charcoal at a 'brat fry,' and the city hosts Bratwurst Days ('Brat Days'), run by the Jaycees, with a bratwurst-eating championship. Surfing on Lake Michigan gave rise to the 'Malibu of the Midwest' tag and the Dairyland Surf Classic (1988-2012), once the largest lake-surfing competition in the world. One of the largest Hmong communities in the U.S., honored by the Sheboygan Hmong Memorial.
What makes Sheboygan distinct. Self-proclaimed 'Bratwurst Capital of the World,' with a distinctive double-brat-on-a-hard-roll custom. A genuine Great Lakes surfing destination despite its Midwest location. Elected the first two Socialists to public office in the United States in 1898. Home to one of the largest Hmong populations in the country. The city's brat boom took off in the 1920s when home refrigerators extended the sausage's shelf life.
