Web Design for Smyrna, Georgia

Smyrna, the 'Jonquil City,' is an inner-ring Atlanta suburb in Cobb County named for the golden jonquils that bloom along its streets each spring. It grew from an 1830s religious camp meeting and railroad stop into a fast-growing city that reinvented its downtown as the walkable Market Village. Home to Glock's American headquarters and neighbor to the Braves' Truist Park, it blends Civil War history, the Silver Comet Trail, and a nationally known spring festival.

AppWT works with Smyrna, GA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Smyrna

Also known as. Jonquil City.

History. Pioneers began settling around 1832, and by the late 1830s the Smyrna Camp Ground religious encampment drew visitors from across Georgia. The Western and Atlantic Railroad, completed through Cobb County by 1842, transformed the frontier village; the settlement was known over time as Varner's Station, Ruff's Siding, Neal Dow, and Ruff's Station. During the Atlanta Campaign, two Civil War battles were fought on July 4, 1864: the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground and the Battle of Ruff's Mill. Sherman's troops burned local homes, businesses, and an 1849-era covered bridge, which was later rebuilt. Georgia incorporated Smyrna as a municipality in 1872, with boundaries originally extending one mile in every direction from the Smyrna Boys' Academy. The city grew rapidly in the late 20th and early 21st centuries as part of metro Atlanta's expansion.

Local economy. Modern economy blends distribution, manufacturing, retail, and professional services. Top employers (2022) include United Distributors (~800), Glock (~638), pharmaceutical company UCB (~499), Publix (~384), and the City of Smyrna (~381). Austrian firearms maker Glock operates its U.S. headquarters in Smyrna. Atlanta Bread Company is headquartered in the city, which also hosts offices for Eaton Corporation and IBM. Population was 55,663 at the 2020 census, with median household income around $73,788 (2018).

Culture and community. The Spring Jonquil Festival, presented on the Village Green, features 200-plus arts and crafts booths, roughly 20 food vendors, multiple beer gardens, two music stages, and children's activities, with a companion Fall Jonquil Festival. Festival food leans Southern and fair-style: BBQ, corn dogs, Polish sausage, hand-dipped ice cream, snow cones, candy apples, and cotton candy. The Market Village and Village Green form a walkable downtown entertainment district built around the city library. The Silver Comet Trail draws cyclists and runners and links toward the Atlanta BeltLine network. Smyrna's notable natives and residents include Oscar-winning actress Julia Roberts, Atlanta Braves players Ron Gant and Gerald Perry, indie musician Cat Power (Chan Marshall), pastor Louie Giglio, and former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr.

What makes Smyrna distinct. The 'Jonquil City' nickname comes from thousands of jonquils (a daffodil relative) that bloom across town each spring. Julia Roberts was born and raised in Smyrna before Hollywood stardom. Glock's entire U.S. operation is headquartered in this Atlanta suburb. The Silver Comet Trail is part of a rail-trail network billed as one of the longest paved trail systems in the U.S., theoretically allowing a car-free trip from metro Atlanta toward Anniston, Alabama. Aunt Fanny's Cabin, a once-famous restaurant (1941-1992) built around overtly racist 'Old South' themes, stood in Smyrna for decades before the city demolished the structure in 2022. The Concord Covered Bridge is one of very few historic covered bridges surviving in the Atlanta metro area.
