South Gate is a dense, working-class city in the Gateway Cities region of southeast Los Angeles County, roughly seven miles from downtown L.A., that rose on the industrial muscle of Firestone tire and General Motors assembly plants which drew Dust Bowl migrants and war workers in the mid-20th century. Once a nearly all-white suburb, it is today more than 90% Latino. It adopted the azalea as its symbol in 1965 and threw its first Azalea Festival in 1966.

About South Gate
Also known as. "Azalea City" (azalea adopted as the city's official flower in 1965). All-America City (1990 award). A Gateway City of southeast L.A. County.
History. The area held at least two Gabrielino/Tongva villages whose ancestors had settled the land more than two thousand years earlier. Named in 1918 after the South Gate Gardens tract on the Cudahy Ranch (also described as the southern gateway to the former Rancho San Antonio). Incorporated on January 20, 1923, with about 2,500 residents. An industrial base begun in the 1920s boomed through World War II, sparking a major postwar housing wave. Named an All-America City in 1990. A political corruption scandal centered on City Treasurer Albert Robles led to a recall election on January 28, 2003, and Robles's later federal bribery conviction.
Local economy. The Firestone Tire and Rubber plant opened in December 1927 and operated until the mid-1980s. General Motors ran the South Gate Assembly plant at 2700 Tweedy Boulevard, which built cars until it closed in April 1982. By 1976 more than 400 industries operated in the city, spanning chemicals, machinery, furniture, and roofing materials. The Tweedy Mile business district, named for the R.D. Tweedy family, remains the city's historic commercial main street. Today the economy leans on manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation/warehousing; the Azalea Regional Shopping Center opened in the 2010s.
Culture and community. The South Gate Azalea Festival & Carnival, first held April 16-17, 1966, features carnival rides and live nortena, cumbia, and banda music. The city is over 90% Hispanic/Latino, with a strong Mexican-American cultural identity. Notable people with South Gate ties include hip-hop group Cypress Hill, Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo, Nobel laureate Glenn Seaborg, country singer Lee Greenwood, and NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle. South Gate Park and the historic South Gate Municipal Auditorium host community concerts and gatherings.
What makes South Gate distinct. The city takes its name from a garden-tract entrance, not a literal gate, and adopted the azalea flower as its symbol in 1965. The Cooper Drum Company site was designated an EPA Superfund cleanup site in 2001 after years of hazardous contamination. The early-2000s corruption scandal and recall of the treasurer and three council members drew national attention. At roughly 92,000 people in about 7.4 square miles, it is one of the most densely populated and most heavily Latino cities in California. The planned Southeast Gateway light-rail line is set to eventually connect the city toward downtown Los Angeles.
Working-class city in the Gateway Cities region about 7 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, nicknamed the Azalea City.
