History. Founded in 1832 as Thompson's Corners. The surrounding township, and then the village, took the name Lyon after state legislator (and later U.S. senator) Lucius Lyon. Incorporated as a village in 1873 and as a city in 1930. A major rail crossroads: the Detroit, Lansing & Northern arrived in 1871, an Ann Arbor Railroad predecessor around 1880, and the Grand Trunk Jackson Branch in 1883; the Grand Trunk line ran until the early 1980s, and a CSX Detroit-Grand Rapids main line still passes through. The 'Witch's Hat' depot was built in 1909 by the Grand Trunk Western after the 1871 Pere Marquette depot burned in 1908; it served passengers until 1955. The city acquired the depot in 1975, moved it to McHattie Park in 1976, and opened it as a museum in 1981. Two notable downtown fires struck the historic South Lyon Hotel (June 23, 2016) and Lyon Cantina (December 31, 2019).
