History. Pierre Michel Campau became the first European settler in 1795, farming land that was then part of rural Ecorse Township. Street grids were first platted in the 1920s, but most residential building came in the boom right after World War II. Incorporated as a city on October 8, 1958, from one of the last remaining pieces of the now-defunct Ecorse Township. First mayor Thomas J. Anderson attributed the name to the planned Southgate Shopping Center at Eureka and Trenton roads; a second account reads the name as the southern gate into Metro Detroit. Population has stayed remarkably stable, from 29,404 in 1960 to 30,014 in the 2020 census.
Local economy. Retail- and dining-heavy identity; the Southgate Shopping Center that opened in 1957 was the city's original economic anchor. Restaurants form a defining economic sector, the basis of the Dining Capital of Downriver nickname. Serves as a residential suburb within the broader Downriver automotive-belt economy of southern Wayne County.
Culture and community. Heritage Days Festival runs early each summer at Market Center Park (13631 Eureka Rd) with a parade, classic car show and business expo, carnival, laser show, Kid O'lympics, a police cornhole tournament, and live music (49th annual referenced).
