Web Design for Sparks, Nevada

Sparks sprang up in 1904 as a Southern Pacific Railroad switch yard in the Truckee Meadows just east of Reno, earning the enduring nickname 'Rail City.' Named for sitting Nevada Governor John Sparks, the town lived and nearly died by the railroad before reinventing itself around gaming, warehousing, and its walkable Victorian Square. Today it is Washoe County's second city, home of the Nugget Casino Resort and one of the most famous rib cook-offs in the country.

AppWT works with Sparks, NV businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Sparks

Also known as. Rail City. (historically also called East Reno, Glendale, and Harriman before it was named for Governor John Sparks).

History. Founded in the summer of 1904 when the Southern Pacific Railroad moved its maintenance shops and headquarters from Wadsworth to the Truckee Meadows; the settlement was variously called East Reno, Glendale, and Harriman before being named 'Sparks' for the sitting Nevada Governor John Sparks. Incorporated on March 15, 1905. To build a workforce town, the railroad set aside five city blocks for employees' homes, sold lots for $1.00 each, and even cut existing houses in Wadsworth into sections and shipped them free by rail to Sparks. In 1956-57 the Southern Pacific completed its conversion from steam to diesel locomotives; the Sparks maintenance facilities became obsolete and the city lost the core of its economy almost overnight, pushing it toward Reno's economy, gaming, and distribution.

Local economy. Originally a company railroad town centered entirely on Southern Pacific operations. After the railroad's decline the economy shifted to tourism and gaming and the city became a major regional warehousing and distribution center. Leading present-day sectors include retail trade (about 12.5%), health care and social assistance (about 11.3%), and accommodation and food services (about 10.6%). The Nugget Casino Resort has long been the city's marquee employer and entertainment anchor.

Culture and community. The Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off, held on Victorian Square over Labor Day weekend, draws more than two dozen professional BBQ teams who serve over 240,000 pounds of ribs to hundreds of thousands of visitors, with free admission and nightly live music. Hot August Nights (classic-car celebration) and Sparks Hometowne Christmas are signature Victorian Square events. Victorian Square hosts the Hometowne Farmers Market, billed as the state's largest farmers market each summer. Great Basin Brewery, Nevada's oldest operating brewery, anchors the Victorian Square dining and nightlife scene.

What makes Sparks distinct. Sparks Marina was a Helms Construction gravel pit (operated 1968-1995) that filled almost overnight during the New Year's Day Flood of January 1997, when the overflowing Truckee River poured an estimated one billion gallons into the hole, instantly creating a 77-acre, roughly 100-foot-deep lake. The Nugget opened as 'Dick Graves' Nugget' on March 17, 1955; general manager John Ascuaga bought it in 1960 and grew it into one of Northern Nevada's largest casinos before his death in 2021. From 1962 through the late 1990s the Nugget's live mascot was Bertha the Elephant, later joined by Tina and Angel; Bertha died in 1999. The Nugget Rib Cook-Off began as a John Ascuaga promotion and grew into one of the largest barbecue events in the nation.
