Web Design for Springfield, Massachusetts

Springfield is the largest city in western Massachusetts and the seat of Hampden County, straddling the Connecticut River about 90 miles west of Boston. Founded in 1636 as the first English settlement named Springfield in the New World, it earned the nickname 'The City of Firsts' for a run of American inventions, most famously basketball, which James Naismith created here in 1891. It is also the birthplace of Dr. Seuss and home to the sprawling Big E fair just across the river.

AppWT works with Springfield, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Springfield

Also known as. The City of Firsts. Hoop City / Birthplace of Basketball. The City of Homes.

History. Founded in 1636 by English colonist William Pynchon, who named it after his hometown of Springfield in England; it was the first of many American Springfields. The U.S. Springfield Armory operated here from 1777 to 1968 as the primary manufacturer of American military firearms, producing the famous 'Springfield rifle' and later serving as an arms center through two world wars; the site is now the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. Basketball was invented in Springfield in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a physical-education instructor at the YMCA International Training School (now Springfield College). In 1893 the Duryea brothers, Charles and Frank, road-tested the first successful American gasoline-powered automobile in Springfield; their car won the first U.S. motor-car race in 1895. Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, was born in Springfield in 1904.

Local economy. MassMutual (Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company) is headquartered in Springfield and is one of the region's largest employers and a Fortune 500 company. Merriam-Webster, publisher of the first widely read American English dictionary, has been based in Springfield since the 19th century. Smith & Wesson, long one of the world's largest handgun makers, was founded in Springfield in 1852 and manufactured there for over a century (corporate HQ relocated to Tennessee in 2023). Peter Pan Bus Lines, the major Northeast intercity bus carrier, was founded in Springfield in 1933 and remains headquartered there. Milton Bradley founded his namesake game company in Springfield in 1860; it later produced games such as Twister and moved to nearby East Longmeadow. Health care and education anchor the modern economy, with Baystate Health among the area's biggest employers.

Culture and community. The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, an 80,000-square-foot museum with a regulation court, celebrates the sport invented in the city. The Big E (Eastern States Exposition), New England's largest agricultural fair, is held each September just across the river in West Springfield. Bright Nights at Forest Park is a large drive-through holiday light display running from November into January. Springfield hosts a downtown 'World's Largest Pancake Breakfast' as a signature civic celebration. Springfield was a major center of American motorcycle manufacturing as the birthplace of the Indian Motorcycle Company.

What makes Springfield distinct. Springfield is the original Springfield: the first place in the New World to carry the name, later copied by dozens of American towns. America's first gasoline-powered car was built and tested on Springfield streets in 1893. The city claims one of the first concrete-paved streets in the United States. Two very different American icons share Springfield roots: the invention of basketball and the birth of Dr. Seuss.
