Web Design for Springfield, Missouri

Springfield, seat of Greene County, is the metropolitan heart of the Missouri Ozarks and the place where U.S. Route 66 got its name in 1926. It birthed both Bass Pro Shops and the deep-fried Springfield-style cashew chicken, hosts the national headquarters of the Assemblies of God, and was the site of Wild Bill Hickok's famous 1865 quick-draw duel on the public square. Health care, outdoor retail, and Route 66 tourism define the modern city.

AppWT works with Springfield, MO businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Springfield

Also known as. Queen City of the Ozarks. Birthplace of Route 66. The 417. SpringVegas.

History. John Polk Campbell arrived around 1829 and staked his claim by carving his initials into a tree; the town was incorporated in 1838 after Campbell donated 50 acres for the county seat. On July 21, 1865, Wild Bill Hickok shot and killed Davis Tutt in a one-on-one quick-draw duel over a gambling debt on what is now Park Central Square, an event often cited as the archetypal Western gunfight. On April 30, 1926, a telegram sent from Springfield's Colonial Hotel to federal officials accepted the number '66' for the new Chicago-to-Los Angeles highway, earning the city its 'Birthplace of Route 66' title (route approved November 11, 1926). The Civil War Battle of Springfield was fought in January 1863.

Local economy. Economy centers on health care, manufacturing, retail, education, and tourism, with roughly 3 million overnight visitors and day-trippers a year. The two dominant employers are the rival hospital systems CoxHealth (around 12,000-13,000 employees) and Mercy (around 9,200). Home to major corporate headquarters including Bass Pro Shops and O'Reilly Auto Parts, plus trucking firm Prime Inc. Missouri State University and Springfield Public Schools are among the largest education employers.

Culture and community. Springfield-style cashew chicken, a deep-fried local invention, was created by Chinese immigrant chef David Leong, who opened Leong's Tea House in 1963; the dish is now ubiquitous citywide. The annual Birthplace of Route 66 Festival fills downtown with vintage cars and performances, drawing tens of thousands. Restored historic venues like the Landers Theatre and Gillioz Theatre anchor the downtown arts scene. Actor Brad Pitt is a Springfield native; the Jane Pitt Pediatric Cancer Center is named for his mother.

What makes Springfield distinct. Springfield is where Route 66 was literally named, making it the highway's official 'birthplace.' Bass Pro Shops began in 1972 when Johnny Morris sold bait and tackle from the back of his parents' liquor store; the company is still headquartered in the city. It hosts the national headquarters of the Assemblies of God, one of the world's largest Pentecostal denominations. Forbes once ranked Springfield the U.S. city with the most varied weather.
