History. First settled in 1870; James Valentine is credited as the first settler, building three structures along what is now U.S. Route 41. The Chicago and North Western Railway received a federal land grant in 1870 and began operating its Menominee-to-Escanaba line in 1871; a station was established at the community in 1872. Its location roughly midway between the two cities made it a necessary place for steam trains to take on water. A post office opened July 13, 1874 under the name 'Wacedah,' with Alva F. Burnham as first postmaster; it was renamed Stephenson on January 10, 1876 after local lumberman and leader Samuel M. Stephenson. Samuel M. Stephenson, the namesake, served in the Michigan House and Senate and then in the U.S. Congress from 1889 to 1896. The city's own history recounts a fire that destroyed 27 downtown buildings, from Robert Street on the south to Samuel Street on the north, at a time when business owners had no insurance or fire protection and relied solely on the Little Cedar River for water. Incorporated as a village in 1898; achieved home-rule city status in 1968.

Local economy. Founded on lumber (the town is named for early area lumbermen); as the mills closed, agriculture and dairy became the economic base. The early village supported a creamery, a flour mill, and the Stephenson Bank, established in 1902 with $20,000 in capital stock and Dr. Edward Sawbridge as president. Today it is a dairy and crop-farming community; for example, Charlie Meintz farms his family's fifth-generation centennial dairy and crop farm near Stephenson. Historically the largest settlement in Menominee County outside the city of Menominee.
