Web Design for Sunnyvale, California

Sunnyvale is a Santa Clara County city of roughly 155,000 that traded apricot and prune orchards for silicon chips to become one of the anchor cities of Silicon Valley. It is widely called the birthplace of the video game industry, since Atari was headquartered here and the first Pong prototype was tested in a local tavern in 1972. Today Google, Apple, Amazon, LinkedIn, and Lockheed Martin Space all operate large campuses in town.

AppWT works with Sunnyvale, CA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Sunnyvale

Also known as. Part of Silicon Valley. City of Destiny (early-1900s booster nickname). Beautiful Murphy (early-1900s promotional name). Historically part of the Valley of Heart's Delight (the pre-tech Santa Clara Valley).

History. Incorporated December 24, 1912. Roots trace to Martin Murphy Jr., who in the 1840s bought thousands of acres and built the first wood-frame house in Santa Clara County (the Bay View ranch); the reconstructed Bay View House anchors the Heritage Park Museum. Developer Walter Crossman bought land in 1897 and first called the town 'Encinal'; it was renamed 'Sunnyvale' in 1901 to avoid confusion with Encinal in Alameda County. The Joshua Hendy Iron Works relocated from San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake, becoming the town's first major non-agricultural industry; Libby, McNeill & Libby opened a fruit-packing cannery the same year. Congress sited a West Coast dirigible base here in 1930, which became Naval Air Station Moffett Field (now Moffett Federal Airfield); NACA, NASA's forerunner, began research at adjacent Ames in 1939. Lockheed moved major operations to Sunnyvale in 1956, cementing the city's aerospace and defense role. In August 1972 the first Atari Pong prototype was installed at Andy Capp's Tavern (now Rooster T. Feathers).

Local economy. Core of Silicon Valley's tech economy; top 2024 employers include Google (~14,400), Apple (~12,500), Amazon (~6,600), Intuitive Surgical, Lockheed Martin Space, Applied Materials, and Meta. Headquarters or major bases for LinkedIn, Fortinet, Juniper Networks, Trimble, Infinera, Proofpoint, Synopsys, and Matterport. Historic economy was agriculture (dried fruit from 1904) and aerospace/defense (Lockheed, the Onizuka satellite-control 'Blue Cube'). Second only to San Jose among Silicon Valley cities in utility patents filed.

Culture and community. Sunnyvale Art & Wine Festival, held on Murphy Avenue and Washington Avenue each June for five decades, draws 200+ artists, live music, and food trucks with free admission. Saturday farmers market runs year-round on historic Murphy Avenue in the walkable downtown. Called 'the birthplace of the video game industry' for its Atari heritage. Large Asian-American community (about half the population); sister-city ties with Iizuka, Japan (2016).

What makes Sunnyvale distinct. One of very few U.S. cities with a unified Department of Public Safety, where every officer is cross-trained as a police officer, firefighter, and EMT. Neighborhoods contain over 1,100 mid-century Eichler homes across 16 tracts. The Onizuka Air Force Station, nicknamed the 'Blue Cube,' was a windowless satellite-control building named for Challenger astronaut Ellison Onizuka; it was demolished after 2010. The site of the first-ever Pong test is now the bar Rooster T. Feathers.

Sunnyvale is one of the major cities of Silicon Valley in Santa Clara County, with major employers including Google, Apple, Amazon and Lockheed Martin Space. It grew from fruit orchards into a high-tech economy.
