History. An 1818 expedition led by Reverend John Monteith found the lake chain and named it 'Timber Lake,' later changed to Sylvan Lake, for its beauty. Isaac Voorheis purchased eastern lakeside land in 1824 and established the first settlement with log structures. Around 1893, Merrill B. Mills and partners established a resort at Sylvan Lake; Mills built the Sylvan Lake Inn and the Pontiac and Sylvan Lake Railroad, a trolley for patrons that ran from 1895 to 1928. The community incorporated as a village in 1921 (Henry J. Stickle first president) and officially became the City of Sylvan Lake in February 1947 (Leo Donaldson first mayor). The Warwick family developed the Sherwood Forest subdivisions from the 1940s through the 1960s, with a third section in the 1980s, building more than 300 homes.
