History. Founded May 21, 1824, by settlers from Jefferson County, New York; the first Anglo-American settlement in Lenawee County. Named after the Shawnee chief Tecumseh. Served as the Lenawee County seat from 1824 until the seat was transferred to Adrian in 1838. In 1935 Henry Ford bought the Hayden Mill to process soybeans grown on his area farms and added a machine shop that made auto parts. Raymond Herrick founded Tecumseh Products Company in 1934, applying Ford-style mass production to refrigeration compressors. In 1961 Ray Herrick bought and renovated the Hayden Mill building and donated it to the community as the Tecumseh Community Center.
Local economy. Tecumseh Products dominated the local economy for much of the 20th century before moving compressor operations to Mississippi in 2008. Kirchhoff Automotive is now the largest employer, with roughly 952 workers, followed by the school district. Downtown carries more than 250 businesses, ranging from Tier-1 automotive suppliers to locally owned bakeries and shoe stores.
Culture and community. The Appleumpkin Festival draws roughly 30,000 visitors each fall. The city also hosts an Ice Sculpting Festival and car shows, plus a downtown Art Trail and Art Walk. Boulevard Market is a downtown specialty-food shop known for more than 100 hand-cut cheeses along with wine and chocolate.
What makes Tecumseh distinct. General George Armstrong Custer's horse, Don Juan, is buried in Tecumseh; Custer bequeathed the horse in his will to a friend who lived there. The town was Lenawee County's seat for only 14 years before losing the designation to Adrian in 1838. Andrew Kehoe, perpetrator of the 1927 Bath School disaster, was born in the Tecumseh area.
