History. Seven bands of Luiseno people inhabited the valley before contact; the Pechanga band traces ancestry in the area back thousands of years. First recorded Spanish visit was October 1797; Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was established nearby in 1798. Became a Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach stop at the Magee Store starting in 1858, and one of California's earliest inland post offices was established April 22, 1859. By the 1890s local granite quarries made Temecula an important shipping point on the railroad. Walter Vail acquired about 38,000 acres in 1904, creating the Vail Ranch cattle operation that defined the valley for decades. The Temecula Valley American Viticultural Area (AVA) was established in 1984; the city incorporated December 1, 1989, with Ron Parks as first mayor.
Local economy. Pechanga Resort Casino is the valley's single largest employer with roughly 5,000 workers; the current $262 million resort opened in 2002 and Pechanga is one of the largest casinos in the western United States. Temecula Valley Unified School District is the largest conventional employer (about 3,238 employees). Abbott Laboratories runs a major medical-device operation employing around 1,700. Other top employers include Temecula Valley Hospital (~1,270), Milgard Manufacturing windows (~530) and Walmart (~500). Tourism, wine production and hospitality form a core economic identity, drawing millions of visitors to Wine Country and Old Town.
Culture and community. Temecula Valley Balloon & Wine Festival: a three-day event at Lake Skinner with dawn hot-air-balloon lift-offs, a nighttime Balloon Glow, wine, craft beer and live music. Old Town features a Saturday farmers market with 70-80 vendors, plus the Temecula Rod Run classic-car show and an annual Outdoor Quilt Show. Farm-to-table dining and tasting-room culture centered on the wineries define the local food scene. Pechanga Resort Casino is a major regional concert and entertainment venue.
What makes Temecula distinct. Temecula is the only city in California to retain its original Native American name; the Luiseno called it "Ekva Temeko," said to mean "the place where the sun breaks through and shines on the white mist." The first commercial vineyard was planted in 1968 by Vincenzo and Audrey Cilurzo, and the valley's warm-day/cool-night microclimate made it Southern California's largest wine-producing region. Snow is essentially unheard of in this hot semi-arid climate; only a trace fell in December 2014. An F1 tornado touched down in Temecula on February 19, 2005 - a rarity for Southern California. The 1985 completion of Interstate 15 triggered the housing boom that turned a ranching valley into a city of about 110,000 by 2020.
