Web Design for Tyler, Texas

Tyler is the commercial hub of East Texas and the self-styled 'Rose Capital of America,' a title earned when farmers turned from failing peach orchards to rose cultivation in the early 1900s. Today Tyler-area growers process a large share of the nation's roses, and the city's identity revolves around the flower, its October Rose Festival, and the largest rose garden in the country. A 1930 oil strike and a strong healthcare sector round out its economy.

AppWT works with Tyler, TX businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Tyler

Also known as. Rose Capital of America. Rose City. Rose Capital of the World.

History. The Texas legislature established Smith County and its county seat on April 11, 1846; the town was laid out that year and named for John Tyler, the 10th U.S. President. Tyler began as a farming center; by 1900 Smith County held more than one million fruit trees, mainly peaches. When peach blight, drought and winter freezes wrecked the fruit industry, farmers switched to roses, which suited the local climate and soil. The discovery of the East Texas oil field in 1930 transformed the area's economy and fueled Tyler's growth.

Local economy. Healthcare is the largest sector: the two hospital systems, UT Health East Texas and CHRISTUS Trinity Mother Frances Health System, are the biggest employers, each with several thousand workers. Higher education and manufacturing add heft through the University of Texas at Tyler, Tyler Junior College, Trane, Tyler Pipe, John Soules Foods and Southside Bank. The rose industry remains an identity anchor, with roughly 75% of all roses in the U.S. processed by Tyler-area companies. By the 1940s, more than half the U.S. supply of rose bushes was grown within about ten miles of Tyler.

Culture and community. The Texas Rose Festival, held each October since 1933, features a Rose Parade, the coronation of a Rose Queen, and a Rose Show, drawing thousands of visitors. Pro Football Hall of Famer Earl Campbell, 'the Tyler Rose,' was born in Tyler in 1955 and won the 1977 Heisman Trophy; the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is named for him. The Caldwell Zoo, opened in 1952, is a beloved local institution and free-flight aviary destination. Local high school football is played at the Rose Stadium complex, tied into the festival's parade route.

What makes Tyler distinct. Tyler is home to the nation's single largest municipal rose garden. The city's rose fame is essentially an accident of disease -- a peach blight that collapsed the fruit industry pushed growers into roses. At its mid-century peak, Smith County produced the great majority of America's commercial rose bushes. The 'Tyler Rose' nickname belongs both to the city and to its most famous native son, Earl Campbell.

East Texas commercial and medical hub long known for rose growing and processing, and the seat of Smith County.
