Union City is a diverse San Francisco Bay Area city in Alameda County of about 70,000 people, created in 1959 by uniting the historic towns of Alvarado and Decoto. Once home to the first successful sugar-beet mill in the United States, it is today a majority-Asian, heavily Filipino community and a BART commuter suburb. It also holds the nation's first completed memorial to the passengers and crew of United Airlines Flight 93.

About Union City
History. The Ohlone (Costanoan) peoples were the first inhabitants, living along the Alameda and Dry Creeks. In 1850 brothers John and William Horner founded a settlement named for their Sacramento River steamship, 'The Union.' In 1854 the community merged with nearby New Haven to form Alvarado, named for Mexican-era Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado; Alvarado hosted Alameda County's first courthouse starting in 1853. Decoto developed to the east as a railroad hub beginning in 1870. Union City incorporated on January 13, 1959, combining the communities of Alvarado and Decoto.
Local economy. The 19th- and early-20th-century economy was agricultural, with potatoes, vegetables and fruit shipped to a fast-growing San Francisco. The California Beet Sugar Company in Alvarado was the first successful sugar-beet mill in the United States, operating from 1870 until demolition in 1977 (California Historical Landmark #768). Major employers include the New Haven Unified School District (about 1,196 jobs), Southern Wine & Spirits (about 600) and Walmart. The American Licorice Company has run its West Coast operations, maker of Red Vines, in Union City since 1971. BART service since 1972 and the rebuilt Union City Intermodal Station make the city a Bay Area commuter hub.
Culture and community. About 57% of residents are Asian and roughly 46% are foreign-born, anchored by a large Filipino-American community. Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School was the first school in the United States named for Filipino Americans, honoring labor leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. James Logan High School's band and color guard are perennial champions -- a multi-time Western Band Association Grand Champion and a repeat WGI Scholastic World color-guard champion. The annual Union City Sister City Festival showcases food, songs and dances from the city's international sister cities.
What makes Union City distinct. The city's name comes from a 19th-century Sacramento River steamship called 'The Union.' Alvarado, now part of Union City, was Alameda County's first county seat. Union City was home to the first successful sugar-beet factory in the United States. The American Licorice Company makes Red Vines in Union City. James Logan High School, one of Northern California's largest high schools, has students who collectively speak around 45 languages.
