Its early growth was tied to the Clinton River and the ambitious but failed Clinton-Kalamazoo Canal project of the 1830s. Fires in 1905 and 1906 destroyed most of the buildings predating that era. By the 1940s Utica was the center of a region of dairy farms and truck gardens, with a flour mill, and it shipped rhubarb. Detroit-area auto-factory construction in neighboring townships in the 1950s transformed the local economy from farming to industry.
