Web Design for Valley Stream, New York

Valley Stream sits at Long Island's western edge, the self-styled 'Gateway to Nassau County,' where Dutch-purchased farmland gave way to 1920s commuter subdivisions and one of Long Island's first shopping malls. Built partly atop a former Curtiss-Wright airfield, home to Green Acres Mall and the birthplace of Snapple, the village also raised a remarkable roster of actors and musicians, from Steve Buscemi to Cyndi Lauper.

AppWT works with Valley Stream, NY businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Valley Stream

Also known as. Gateway to Nassau County (for its position at the county's western border).

History. The land that became Valley Stream was purchased in 1640 by the Dutch West India Company from the Rockaway Native Americans. The community was named by Robert Pagan, a Scottish immigrant who ran the first post office out of his farmhouse and chose 'Valley Stream' for the area's topography and the Valley Stream Brook running through it; the U.S. Post Office accepted the name in 1843. Developer William R. Gibson, who had built thousands of homes in Queens, began developing about 500 acres in Valley Stream in 1922; the Gibson LIRR station, named for him, opened May 29, 1929. The Village of Valley Stream was incorporated on February 14, 1925. In 1929 the Curtiss-Wright Flying Service bought the Reisert farm, land later redeveloped into the Green Acres complex.

Local economy. Transitioned from farmland (the 1840 census recorded only about 20 families) into a dense railroad commuter suburb of New York City. Green Acres Mall, built in 1956 by the Chanin Organization on part of the former Curtiss airfield, was one of Long Island's first open-air malls; now owned by Macerich, it is undergoing major redevelopment. Retail and small business anchor the local economy, alongside residents who commute via the LIRR to Manhattan. Several well-known enterprises trace their roots to Valley Stream, including the Snapple beverage brand and the National Amusements movie-theater chain.

Culture and community. Valley Stream has produced a striking number of entertainers, including actor/director Steve Buscemi (Valley Stream Central High class of 1975), musician Cyndi Lauper (lived on the west side before fame), comedian Fred Armisen, actor/director Edward Burns, and tennis champion Naomi Osaka. Buscemi's 1996 film 'Trees Lounge' is set in and was largely shot in his childhood village of Valley Stream. Firemen's Memorial Field is a long-standing community gathering place, host to the village's annual summer fireworks spectacular. Actress Rita Moreno lived in neighboring North Valley Stream.

What makes Valley Stream distinct. The Snapple beverage company and the National Amusements movie-theater chain both trace their origins to Valley Stream. Green Acres Mall stands on a former Curtiss-Wright airfield, once farmland the aviation company bought for a reported $2 million in 1929. Scenes from 'Goodfellas,' 'Married to the Mob' and Buscemi's 'Trees Lounge' were filmed in the village. Firemen's Memorial Field was deeded to the village for $8,500 on the condition that it forever keep the name honoring the fire department that originally received it.
