History. Founded March 1, 1849 by four men led by Townsend North and James M. Edmunds, who scouted the Cass River for a site to build a dam and start a town. Named after Matthew Vassar, uncle of co-founder James M. Edmunds; Matthew Vassar later founded Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York. Served as the original county seat of Tuscola County until 1860, when the seat was moved to Caro. Cork pine (white pine) lumbering dominated the economy for roughly 30 years; the trees reached 150 feet tall with trunks over three feet across, and millions of board feet were shipped to the prairie states. Incorporated as a village in 1871 and voted to become a city on September 28, 1944 (charter approved February 19, 1945). Became a rail junction in 1871 where the Michigan Central Bay City Branch crossed the Port Huron & Northwestern line (later the Pere Marquette). The Cass River flooded the town repeatedly, at least 28 times between 1900 and the 1930s; the March 1908 flood put about 8 feet of water over Huron Avenue and residents rowed boats down the streets in 1916. A Michigan Central freight train derailed near the depot on October 5, 1911, smashing wooden cars but causing no fatalities.
Local economy. Built on the 19th-century cork-pine lumber trade, then diversified into agriculture, manufacturing, and retail after the forests were cut over. Early-1900s factories included the Butcher Crate Company (wooden shipping crates) and the Vassar Foundry (metal parts). Sugar beet and corn farming became significant parts of the local farm economy. Leading employment sectors for residents today are retail trade, construction, and manufacturing.
Culture and community. Hosts Mid-Michigan's Enchanted Forest Renaissance Festival, founded in 2008 by Vincent Knoll, running summer weekends at 7464 Frankenmuth Rd with jousting, stage shows, a working tavern, and a food court. Serves as the paved trailhead for the Vassar Rail Trail, which begins at the Townsend North Pavilion and park at the end of South Cass Avenue. Is an access point on the Cass River Water Trail, a network of 13 kayak/canoe launch sites along the Cass River. Downtown's brick storefronts along Main and Huron Avenues once held hardware stores, general stores, and bicycle shops.
