Victoria, the seat of Victoria County, was founded in 1824 by Mexican empresario Martin De Leon as Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe de Jesus Victoria, named for Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of independent Mexico. One of the oldest towns in Texas, it is nicknamed 'The Crossroads' for its central position among Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Corpus Christi. It blends deep Hispanic and later European immigrant heritage with a modern petrochemical and manufacturing economy.

About Victoria
Also known as. The Crossroads. Crossroads of South Texas.
History. Colonization began in 1824 when empresario Martin De Leon established the settlement on the Guadalupe River, the only colony in Texas founded by a Mexican empresario. The town was named in honor of Guadalupe Victoria, the first president of independent Mexico. By 1835 the Mexican government had issued more than 100 land-grant titles as the colony prospered. After Santa Anna's defeat at San Jacinto, the town's name was shortened to Victoria; the community supplied horses, cattle, and provisions during the Texas Revolution. Victoria became the county seat of Victoria County and one of the earliest charter cities created under the Republic of Texas.
Local economy. A petrochemical and plastics manufacturing complex has grown around Victoria since the 1950s, providing above-average-wage jobs for more than 7,000 workers for nearly 70 years. Major employers include Caterpillar, Formosa Plastics, Invista, and Alcoa. The University of Houston-Victoria, established in 1971, enrolls more than 4,000 students each semester and fields athletic teams in the Red River Athletic Conference. Business clusters span industrial and metals manufacturing, petroleum and chemical manufacturing, and plastics and materials manufacturing.
Culture and community. Bootfest, held in October, is Victoria's largest free festival, celebrating Texas music, food, and culture with live performances, a carnival, and local vendors. The city supports a Victoria Symphony Orchestra and a lively arts scene. Victoria reflects both Hispanic heritage rooted in the De Leon colony and the culture of European immigrants who arrived in the decades after the Texas Revolution.
What makes Victoria distinct. Martin De Leon was the only Mexican empresario to found a colony in Texas, settling with about 40 families on the Guadalupe River. The Texas Zoo in Victoria was designated 'The National Zoo of Texas' by the Texas Legislature. The Museum of the Coastal Bend interprets some 13,000 years of Texas history. Victoria's 'Crossroads' nickname reflects its roughly central position: about 120 miles from Houston, 102 from San Antonio, 110 from Austin, and 75 from Corpus Christi.
Victoria is a regional trade hub for the Texas Crossroads region, with an economy spanning healthcare, education, agriculture, retail, and petrochemicals.
