A high-desert city on old Route 66 in San Bernardino County's Victor Valley, Victorville grew from a lonely railroad and wagon-road waystation into Southern California's logistics gateway over the Cajon Pass. It trades on Mother Road nostalgia, cowboy-star history, and one of the world's largest airplane boneyards baking in the Mojave sun.

About Victorville
Also known as. Key City (of the High Desert). Gateway to the High Desert. High Desert Gateway.
History. In 1858 Aaron G. Lane established 'Lane's Crossing,' a waystation on the Mojave River that supplied travelers crossing the desert toward San Bernardino. Founded in 1885 as a Santa Fe/California Southern Railroad station named 'Victor' for construction superintendent Jacob Nash Victor. Renamed 'Victorville' in 1901 (at the suggestion of postmistress Abbey Turner) to end postal confusion with Victor, Colorado. Route 66 was routed through town in 1926, sparking diners, motels, and service businesses along D and Seventh streets. George Air Force Base operated on the site from 1941 to 1992; the land later became the Southern California Logistics Airport.
Local economy. Multimodal transportation and logistics hub; an estimated 60% of goods moving in and out of Southern California pass through Victorville. Southern California Logistics Airport (SCLA), on the former George AFB, anchors warehousing, distribution, and aviation industry. One of the world's largest airliner boneyards/storage-and-maintenance facilities, with capacity for up to ~500 aircraft (second only to Davis-Monthan). Aviation tenants and customers include Pratt & Whitney, GE, Boeing, FedEx, and international cargo carriers like Cargolux and Volga-Dnepr.
Culture and community. Route 66 heritage defines local identity, including a nostalgic restaurant row and Mother Road tourism. Strong cowboy-Western connection through movie star Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, whose Double R Bar Ranch sat along the Mojave River near town. Neighborhood parks and an aquatic center serve as community gathering spots in the desert heat.
What makes Victorville distinct. The boneyard's hangars can paint wide-body jets, including Boeing 747-8s, 777-300s, and 787 Dreamliners. The city exists partly because of a postal name clash: 'Victor' had to become 'Victorville' to avoid confusion with a Colorado town. Sits in the 'High Desert' elevation band (roughly 2,000-4,000 feet), giving it a cooler, drier climate than the LA basin below the pass.
Victorville is the principal city of the Victor Valley on the southwestern edge of the Mojave Desert, a regional hub with roots in U.S. Route 66 and a growing logistics economy.
