About Waco
Also known as. Six-Shooter Junction. Athens of Texas. Geyser City. Jerusalem on the Brazos.
History. Waco was founded in 1849 on the site of a Waco (Hueco) Indian village near a former Texas Ranger fort, and the community took the tribe's name. It grew as a cotton and plantation trade center, and the Chisholm and Shawnee cattle trails crossed the Brazos here after the Civil War. The 1870 Waco Suspension Bridge was the first bridge across the Brazos and, when built, the longest single-span suspension bridge west of the Mississippi. Baylor University moved to Waco in 1886 and merged with Waco University. An F5 tornado struck downtown on May 11, 1953, killing 114 people; it was one of the deadliest tornadoes in Texas history and the first officially rated F5 in the U.S. In 1993, a 51-day standoff between federal agents and the Branch Davidians at the Mount Carmel compound outside Waco ended on April 19 with a fire that killed roughly 76 people.
Local economy. Baylor University is a major employer and economic engine, supporting a large education sector. Waco has a strong healthcare and medical sector. Manufacturing and industry include Dr Pepper's heritage, food production, aerospace, and logistics. Tourism surged after the home-renovation show Fixer Upper, with Chip and Joanna Gaines's Magnolia Market at the Silos drawing millions of visitors annually.
Culture and community. Dr Pepper, America's oldest major soft drink, was invented in Waco in 1885 by pharmacist Charles Alderton at Morrison's Old Corner Drug Store, and the Dr Pepper Museum occupies an early bottling plant. Baylor Bears athletics compete in the Big 12, rallying fans with the "Sic 'Em Bears" cheer. Magnolia Market at the Silos, set in 1950 grain silos, hosts the annual "Silobration" fall festival. Balcones Distilling makes award-winning "Original Texas Whiskey," and the nearby Homestead Heritage Mennonite community offers crafts and farm-to-table dining.
What makes Waco distinct. Dr Pepper was created in Waco in 1885, a year before Coca-Cola. The Waco Mammoth site is regarded as the only U.S. discovery of a nursery herd of Ice Age Columbian mammoths. The 1953 Waco twister was the first tornado ever officially rated F5 in the United States. The city carried the clashing nicknames "Athens of Texas," for culture and education, and "Six-Shooter Junction," for frontier lawlessness. The 22-story ALICO Building, one of the tallest in Texas when completed in 1911, famously survived the 1953 tornado.
