History. Iron ore was discovered near the east end of Sunday Lake, with George A. Fay credited with the 1881 find that sparked the mining rush. George Mix Wakefield, a New York-born logger and mineral explorer, platted the town site in May 1886, giving the community its name. Wakefield incorporated as a village in 1887 and became a city in 1919. During the mining boom the town hosted 15 or more mines, including the Sunday Lake, Plymouth, Wakefield, Mikado, and Castile mines; population peaked at 4,151 in 1920. The Sunday Lake Mine, the largest operation, closed on February 16, 1961, after shipping more than 17 million tons of ore. The 2020 census counted 1,702 residents, a decline of roughly 59 percent from the 1920 peak.

Local economy. Iron mining founded and sustained the town for its first several decades. After 1961 the economy shifted to forestry, services, and tourism; a county forest project begun in 1941 modeled sustainable selective-cutting. Winter tourism became a mainstay, fed by roughly 156 to 240 inches of annual snowfall. Healthcare and eldercare are major employers, including the 109-bed Gogebic County Medical Care Facility and KeenAgers assisted-living housing.

Culture and community. The Fourth of July is a week-long tradition featuring softball tournaments, class reunions, church services, parades, and fireworks over Sunday Lake. Goodland practiced law in Wakefield earlier in his career. Skiing and snowmobiling define the winter culture at the resorts just outside town.
