History. Ojibwa and Potawatomi peoples inhabited the area until around 1830. First settler Walter Hewitt arrived in 1825 and noted what appeared to be a stone wall along the western bank of the lake, possibly built by the Potawatomi, inspiring the community's name. The Foster Farmhouse, built in 1833, served as an Underground Railroad refuge for people escaping slavery en route to Canada; it was relocated to Riley Park in 1997 to save it from demolition. The Walled Lake Casino dance hall opened in the early-to-mid 1920s and the Walled Lake Amusement Park opened on Memorial Day 1929. The Casino burned on December 25, 1965, reportedly from a cigarette tossed into a wastebasket. The amusement park deteriorated and closed permanently in 1968 amid competition from other parks and the rise of home pools and television. Walled Lake incorporated as a city in 1954.

It anchors part of the Walled Lake Consolidated Schools district, a major institutional presence, and lies just east of Wixom and north of Novi in Oakland County's job corridor.

The Walled Lake Casino was a famed dance ballroom (not a gambling hall) that in the 1930s drew Benny Goodman, Louis Armstrong, Guy Lombardo, and Tommy Dorsey, with live radio broadcasts spreading its fame nationwide. Later performers at the Casino included Chuck Berry, the Four Seasons, and a young Stevie Wonder, right up until the 1965 fire. The Walled Lake Amusement Park featured rides such as Fred Pearce's 'Flying Dragon' roller coaster, 'The Pretzel,' and a Tilt-a-Whirl, and was a favorite for company picnics. The park and lakefront were marketed as metro Detroit's 'Picnic Wonderland,' reachable by automobile via new highways like Grand River Avenue.
What makes Walled Lake distinct. The city is literally named for a low stone wall around parts of the lake, whose origin (glacial deposition versus Native American construction) is still debated.
