Web Design for Walnut Creek, California

Walnut Creek is the retail and cultural hub of central Contra Costa County, sitting in the East Bay about 16 miles east of Oakland at the foot of Mount Diablo. Named for the native walnut trees that once lined its namesake creek, the former farm town became a postwar shopping magnet and today pairs an upscale downtown with more protected open space per capita than any other city in California.

AppWT works with Walnut Creek, CA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Walnut Creek

Also known as. The Creek. Dub-C. The Nut. Nuts Creek (an old simplification of its Spanish name).

History. The area was home to three bands of Bay Miwok people, including the Saclan, before European settlement. The town took its name from the creek, itself named for abundant native Northern California walnut trees (Juglans hindsii); its post office opened in the 1860s. Southern Pacific Railroad service arrived in 1891, spurring growth, and Walnut Creek incorporated on October 21, 1914, as the eighth city in Contra Costa County. The 1951 opening of the downtown Broadway shopping center, the county's first major retail center, reshaped the city; its population more than quadrupled from 2,460 in 1950 to 9,903 in 1960.

Local economy. Central Garden & Pet, maker of brands such as Kaytee, Amdro and AvoDerm, is headquartered in the city. Downtown's Broadway Plaza is a regional shopping and dining destination that draws visitors from across the East Bay. Other companies based here include American Reprographics Company and CSE Insurance Group. The city is affluent, with a 2023 median household income around $135,665.

Culture and community. The Lesher Center for the Arts, opened in 1990 on the site of a beloved earlier venue nicknamed the nut house, houses three theaters and the Bedford Gallery and is called the soul of the city. The Walnut Creek Art & Wine Festival, held the first weekend of June at Heather Farm Park for more than 40 years, has repeatedly won recognition as a top East Bay outdoor event. The city has notable Middle Eastern communities, including Iranian and Jordanian residents. Walnut Creek raised athletes including WNBA star Sabrina Ionescu and Hall of Fame pitcher Randy Johnson, who was born there.

What makes Walnut Creek distinct. Walnut Creek owns more open space per capita than any other community in California. Locals long shortened the Spanish-derived name to Nuts Creek, and the old downtown arts venue was affectionately called the nut house before the Lesher Center replaced it. Despite its polished, urban downtown, the city is ringed by ridgeline preserves that keep cattle-grazed grasslands within minutes of the shops.

Walnut Creek is an upscale East Bay city known for its lively downtown, Broadway Plaza shopping, and extensive protected open space below the western slopes of Mount Diablo
