Weslaco sits deep in the Rio Grande Valley of Hidalgo County, a bilingual border city whose very name is an acronym for the developer that platted it in 1919. Once a citrus-and-vegetable farm town, it reinvented itself after NAFTA into a cross-border trade, healthcare, and retail hub, while its subtropical wetlands make it a marquee stop on the birding trail and a winter refuge for snowbirds. Locals still point to the old Spanish-colonial downtown that gave the city its glowing nickname.

About Weslaco
Also known as. City with the Neon Skyline. Gateway Between Texas and Mexico.
History. Platted in 1919; the name 'Weslaco' is an acronym for the W.E. Stewart Land Company, the developer that laid out the townsite. A railroad depot built in 1927 drew canning plants, dehydrating plants, and a box factory, and a ground-level water reservoir followed in 1928. The first Weslaco 'Birthday Party' celebration was held in December 1929 with a parade and style show; by 1930 the population had reached about 5,300. In 1936 civic rules required businesses downtown to remodel in Spanish colonial architecture outlined in neon, earning the 'City with the Neon Skyline' nickname. Cpl. Harlon Block, one of the Marines in the second flag-raising on Mount Suribachi at Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945, was from Weslaco; he is the figure planting the pole in the base of the flagstaff.
Local economy. Historically built on citrus and vegetable farming, aided by rich delta soil, irrigation, and rail access in the 1920s-30s. Since NAFTA (1994), international trade became central: cross-border cargo traffic through the region surged and Hidalgo County bridge trade grew from about $5.0 billion (1994) to $19.9 billion (2006). Healthcare is a major employer, anchored by Knapp Medical Center (a Prime Healthcare facility) with 233 beds and a trauma unit. Retail, tourism, and the Winter Texan snowbird economy are significant; South Texas College's Mid-Valley Campus and a Texas A&M AgriLife agricultural research center are based here.
Culture and community. Predominantly Mexican-American: roughly 89% of residents identify as Hispanic or Latino, and the city sits across the Rio Grande from Nuevo Progreso, Tamaulipas. A major Winter Texan destination, drawing seasonal residents interested in birds, butterflies, and botany. Nature and birding tourism define the local identity, with Estero Llano Grande State Park documenting roughly 340 bird species. Border food culture and proximity to the Nuevo Progreso international bridge shape dining and shopping.
What makes Weslaco distinct. The city's name is literally an acronym: W.E. Stewart Land Company became WESLACO. Weslaco is the hometown of Harlon Block, one of the six flag-raisers immortalized in the Iwo Jima Memorial. Despite its humid subtropical climate, Weslaco recorded about 3 inches of snow on Christmas Day 2004. Actor Pat Hingle, who played Commissioner Gordon in the Tim Burton Batman films, graduated from Weslaco High School. WBC lightweight boxing champion Omar Figueroa Jr. hails from Weslaco.
A bicultural border city at the southern tip of the Rio Grande Valley, known as a gateway between Texas and Mexico and a popular Winter Texan destination.
