West Jordan is Utah's third-most-populous city, spread across the west bank of the Jordan River in the Salt Lake Valley southwest of Salt Lake City. Founded by Mormon pioneers in 1849 as a farming and milling settlement, it exploded from about 4,200 residents in 1970 to nearly 117,000 by 2020. Today it blends fast-growing suburbia (the Jordan Landing megadevelopment) with pioneer-era charm at Gardner Village.

About West Jordan
History. Founded around 1849 on the western banks of the Jordan River by Mormon settlers who had entered the Salt Lake Valley in 1847 under Brigham Young; they named the river the 'Western Jordan' in reference to the biblical River Jordan, since like its namesake it flows from a freshwater lake (Utah Lake) to an inland salt sea (Great Salt Lake). Pioneer Archibald Gardner built one of the area's first sawmills in 1850; a large gristmill completed on the site in 1877, along with its waterwheel, still stands and anchors today's Gardner Village. Sugar beet production was centered in West Jordan, which operated a large sugar factory for many years. Incorporated as a town by the Salt Lake County Commission on January 10, 1941, with a population under 2,000. Became one of the fastest-growing communities in the U.S. starting in the late 1960s: population rose from 4,221 (1970) to 27,327 (1980) to 103,712 (2010) to 116,961 (2020).
Local economy. Early economy rested on agriculture, mills, mining, and especially sugar beets. Major present-day employers include Mountain America Credit Union, Cyprus Credit Union, SME Steel, Lynco Sales & Service, and Jordan Valley Medical Center. Jordan Landing is one of the largest mixed-use planned developments in the Intermountain West, one of four major retail centers in the city. Home to South Valley Regional Airport, which serves general aviation and hosts the Utah Army National Guard's 211th Aviation Regiment.
Culture and community. The Western Stampede is West Jordan's premier summer celebration, a PRCA-sanctioned rodeo held around July 2-4 with a parade, carnival, concerts, and fireworks; it celebrated its 70th year in 2025. Gardner Village's WitchFest (also home to the Witchapalooza dinner theater) has run as one of Utah's signature Halloween events since 2000, decorating the village with witch displays and a scavenger hunt each fall. Boxing heritage: world middleweight champion (1957) Gene Fullmer and his brother, contender Don Fullmer, were from West Jordan.
What makes West Jordan distinct. The city's namesake Jordan River was dubbed the 'Western Jordan' by settlers because it mirrors the Holy Land's River Jordan, running from a freshwater lake to a salt sea. West Jordan's sister city is Votkinsk, Russia, the birthplace of composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Each fall Gardner Village is 'invaded' by dozens of life-size witch figures for its long-running WitchFest. A fictional store in HBO's polygamy drama 'Big Love' was set in West Jordan.
