Weston is a wealthy, master-planned city in western Broward County that sits right against the Everglades, about 31 miles northwest of Miami. Developed by Arvida from former Indian Trace land, it is known for manicured neighborhoods, top schools, very low crime, and a large Venezuelan-American population that earned it the nickname 'Westonzuela.' Incorporated only in 1996, it runs on a lean 'contract city' model that outsources most services.

About Weston
Also known as. Westonzuela (informal nickname for its large Venezuelan community). "The Nation's Premier Municipal Corporation" (official motto). Residents called Westonians or Westonites.
History. In the 1950s industrialist and philanthropist Arthur Vining Davis took control of roughly 15,000 acres that would become Weston; his company Arvida became the developer. The development was originally known as Indian Trace, and the Indian Trace Development of Regional Impact was approved in 1978. The name was changed from Indian Trace to Weston in the early 1980s. The first Arvida-built homes were completed in 1984 in the Country Isles and Windmill Ranch sections. Weston officially became a city on September 3, 1996, with about 90% of voters approving incorporation. Broward County itself was created April 30, 1915, and named for former Florida governor Napoleon Bonaparte Broward.
Local economy. Weston is a corporate and office hub hosting operations of companies such as UKG (formerly Ultimate Software), DHL, Marriott International, Abbott Laboratories, Mondelez, Rockwell Automation, and American Express. Cleveland Clinic Weston Hospital, a fully integrated medical campus at 3100 Weston Road, is a major regional employer and healthcare anchor. The median household income reached about $122,774 in 2021, marking Weston as an exceptionally affluent community. As of 2010 only about 2.3% of residents lived below the poverty line. The city operates on a 'contract city' model, keeping few direct employees and outsourcing many municipal services.
Culture and community. The Venezuelan-American community is so prominent that Weston is nicknamed 'Westonzuela'; as of 2000 it had the highest number and percentage of Venezuelans of any U.S. city (about 9.4% of residents). The population is majority Hispanic/Latino (about 54% in 2020), with sizable Colombian and Puerto Rican communities, giving the city a strongly Latin American cultural flavor. Weston Town Center, a 32-acre outdoor shopping and dining complex with a bell tower and amphitheater, is the community's social and event hub. Weston FC is described as Florida's largest youth/competitive soccer club, reflecting a strong local soccer culture. The city maintains two country clubs, Weston Hills and Bonaventure Golf Club.
What makes Weston distinct. Weston is the westernmost city in Broward County and its western edge sits directly against the Everglades. Despite feeling long-established, it only incorporated in 1996, making it a relatively young city. It is frequently cited among Florida's safest and most affluent cities, with very low poverty and high household income. The city contains the Peace Mound, an ancient Tequesta indigenous site, preserved amid the modern master-planned development. Its 'contract city' government keeps a very small in-house staff for a city of nearly 70,000 people.
