Wilmington is a historic port city on the Cape Fear River, long a trade hub for rice, timber, and naval stores and once the Confederacy's last open Atlantic port. Its enormous, well-preserved downtown historic district and riverfront draw tourists, while a robust film industry (Dawson's Creek, One Tree Hill, and hundreds of other productions) earned it the nickname 'Hollywood East.' The city carries a heavy history, including the 1898 white-supremacist coup and massacre, and in 2020 became the first designated American World War II Heritage City.
