History. The area was settled in 1831 by 20-year-old Alonzo Sibley, who bought roughly 430 acres and gave the crossroads its early name, Sibley's Corners. The community was renamed for Willard Clark Wixom, who in 1871 granted a right of way through his property for the Holly, Wayne and Monroe Railway and platted a railroad junction near the Novi and Commerce Township border. Willard Wixom was struck and killed by a passenger train while crossing the tracks in his horse and buggy on December 24, 1901. Wixom incorporated as a village in 1957 after Ford announced its assembly plant, then became a city in 1958.

Local economy. The Ford Wixom Assembly Plant operated from 1957 to 2007 and built about 6,648,806 vehicles over 50 years, including Lincoln cars, the Ford Thunderbird, the 1960s Ford GT40 and the 2000s Ford GT. In its early years the city collected roughly 85% of its tax revenue from the Ford plant. The plant closed in 2007 and was demolished starting in 2012, prompting the city to diversify. Major current employers include Trijicon (rifle optics), Discraft (disc golf equipment), NGK, Rockwell Medical, Majic Window, and WTVS Detroit Public Television, whose studios are in Wixom.

Culture and community. The Downtown Development Authority runs seasonal events including Sip n Stroll, Derby Day Races, a September Block Party, the Spooktacular Downtown Treat Hunt and Candy Cane Lane. Most students attend Walled Lake Consolidated Schools, and Walled Lake Western High School serves the area.

The city is named for Willard Wixom, who was killed the way the town was born: struck by a train on the very railroad line he helped bring through his land.
