Web Design for Worcester, Massachusetts
Worcester is the 'Heart of the Commonwealth,' the second-largest city in New England, set among the hills of central Massachusetts. An old mill and manufacturing town, it gave the world the smiley face, the modern mass-produced valentine, the monkey wrench, and rocketry pioneer Robert Goddard, and it built diners that shipped across the country. Its economy now runs on colleges, hospitals, and biotech, while its identity stretches from the 'Wormtown' punk scene to the WooSox at Polar Park.
AppWT works with Worcester, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Worcester
Also known as. Heart of the Commonwealth. Wormtown. The Woo.
History. The site, called Quinsigamond, was long home to the Nipmuc people. European settlement attempts in 1673 and the 1680s were abandoned amid conflict, including King Philip's War, before a permanent settlement took hold in 1713. Incorporated as a town in 1722 and named for Worcester, England. Became a city in 1848. Industrial growth in the 19th century was fueled by the Blackstone Canal, opened in 1828, and the railroads, which carried in raw materials and shipped out machinery, textiles, and wire. Worcester hosted the first National Woman's Rights Convention in 1850.
Local economy. The economy reoriented from manufacturing toward 'eds and meds,' led by UMass Chan Medical School, UMass Memorial Health, and Saint Vincent Hospital. A dense cluster of colleges anchors the city, including the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Clark University, and Worcester State University. The Massachusetts Biotechnology Research Park helped seed a life-sciences and high-tech sector. Worcester is the second-largest city in New England after Boston, giving it a regional service, education, and healthcare hub role.
Culture and community. The Worcester Red Sox ('WooSox'), Triple-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, play at Polar Park, which opened in 2021, with mascots Smiley Ball and Roberto the Rocket (named for Robert Goddard). Shrewsbury Street is the city's restaurant row, and local food icons include Table Talk Pies (baking single-serve pies since 1924) and locally made Polar Beverages. Worcester has deep diner heritage: the Worcester Lunch Car Company built 651 diners between 1906 and 1957, and the Miss Worcester Diner still serves customers. Cultural institutions include the Worcester Art Museum, Mechanics Hall (an 1857 concert hall), the EcoTarium, and the American Antiquarian Society. The gritty 'Wormtown' nickname grew out of the city's underground punk and rock scene of the late 1970s.
What makes Worcester distinct. The smiley face was created in Worcester by graphic artist Harvey Ball in 1963, reportedly in about ten minutes, for an insurance company morale campaign. Esther Howland, the 'Mother of the American Valentine,' began mass-producing elaborate valentines in Worcester in 1848 using an all-female assembly line. The monkey wrench was invented in Worcester by Loring Coes of the Coes Wrench Company, patented in 1871. Worcester native Robert Goddard, a WPI graduate and Clark University professor, launched the world's first liquid-fueled rocket in nearby Auburn on March 16, 1926. Gregory Pincus co-developed the birth control pill at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology in neighboring Shrewsbury. Candlepin bowling, played with skinny pins and small handheld balls, was invented in Worcester in 1880. The 'Turtle Boy' statue on the Burnside Fountain has become the city's cheeky unofficial mascot.
