History. Organized in the early 1870s as 'Nickelville,' reportedly named for the first store in town. In 1886 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway laid tracks a half-mile north; businesses relocated to the line and renamed the settlement Wylie for W. D. Wylie, a railroad right-of-way agent and Civil War veteran; the town incorporated in 1887. Onions were the cash crop in the 1930s-1940s, and dairy farming grew during the Great Depression to supply Dallas. Construction of Lavon Dam and the arrival of the North Texas Municipal Water District headquarters spurred mid-20th-century growth. A tornado devastated downtown on Mother's Day, May 9, 1993. A April 11, 2016 storm dropped softball-sized hail that damaged about 80% of homes and caused more than $240 million in damage.
Local economy. Sanden International, a major manufacturer of automotive air-conditioning compressors, operates a large facility on Sanden Boulevard. The North Texas Municipal Water District is headquartered in Wylie and draws water from adjacent Lavon Lake. Kansas City Southern Railway runs an intermodal freight facility in the city. Collin College opened a Wylie campus in August 2020 built to serve up to 7,500 students. Retail and restaurant growth is promoted by the Wylie Economic Development Corporation.
Culture and community. The Wylie Championship Rodeo, a two-night UPRA-sanctioned rodeo run by the Area Chamber of Commerce, is a signature September event. Bluegrass on Ballard and Boo on Ballard bring music and Halloween festivities to Olde City Park and historic downtown. Other annual events include the Wylie 500 Pedal Car Races, Taste of Wylie, and the Wylie Arts Festival. The 'Wide Awake Wylie' identity grew from a mid-century habit of shops, restaurants, and live music staying open past midnight.
What makes Wylie distinct. Wylie farmers once billed the town as the 'Onion Capital of the World' because the local soil grew prized sweet onions shipped nationwide.
