Web Design for Yonkers, New York

Yonkers is New York's third-largest city and the biggest in Westchester County, a hilly Hudson River community of more than 200,000 just north of the Bronx. Its name comes from the Dutch honorific 'jonkheer' given to 17th-century landholder Adriaen van der Donck, and its riverfront industrial past produced the Otis safety elevator and one of the world's largest carpet mills. Recent decades brought a celebrated 'daylighting' of the long-buried Saw Mill River and a thriving hip-hop legacy.

AppWT works with Yonkers, NY businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Yonkers

Also known as. City of Seven Hills. City of Gracious Living.

History. In 1646 Dutch lawyer Adriaen van der Donck received a land patent in New Netherland and established the estate Colen Donck; locals called him the 'jonkheer,' which evolved into 'Yonkers.' Frederick Philipse built Philipse Manor Hall around 1682 using both hired and enslaved labor, and the Philipse family's holdings dominated the colonial-era area. Yonkers was connected to New York City by railroad in 1849 and incorporated as a city in 1872. Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator and opened his first elevator factory in Yonkers in the 1850s, spurring the city's industrial rise. In 1888 John Reid and fellow golfers founded St. Andrew's Golf Club in Yonkers, recognized as the first golf club in the United States.

Local economy. Consumer Reports is headquartered in Yonkers, at 101 Truman Avenue, where it runs its testing facilities and editorial operations. Kawasaki Rail Car operates a rail-car assembly plant in Yonkers, on the site of a former Otis Elevator factory, building subway and commuter cars. Yonkers Raceway & Empire City Casino, a harness track dating to 1899 and operated by MGM Resorts International, is a major entertainment employer. The economy shifted over the 20th century from heavy manufacturing (Otis Elevator, the Alexander Smith carpet mills) toward commerce, retail, and services.

Culture and community. Yonkers is a landmark of hip-hop, home to DMX and Mary J. Blige and to the D-Block/The Lox rappers Jadakiss and Styles P. Jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald grew up in Yonkers, and Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and actor Jon Voight are also city natives. In 2026 the city voted to rename streets in DMX's old neighborhood 'Earl DMX Simmons Way' to honor the late rapper. The Hudson River Museum in Trevor Park pairs art, science, and a planetarium on a bluff overlooking the Hudson.

What makes Yonkers distinct. Yonkers spent roughly $48 million in the 2010s to 'daylight' the Saw Mill River, uncovering six downtown blocks of a stream that had been buried in a flume for nearly a century. The name 'Yonkers' traces to the Dutch honorific 'jonkheer' (young lord), not to any person named Yonker. Elisha Otis's safety elevator, dramatically demonstrated at an 1854 New York exhibition, grew out of his Yonkers factory and helped make skyscrapers possible. Cross County Center predates the enclosed-mall boom, opening as an open-air shopping destination in 1954.
