An affluent north Orange County suburb, Yorba Linda calls itself the Land of Gracious Living, a nickname it has carried since the 1920s. Once a landscape of lemon and orange groves carved from a Spanish land grant, it is best known as the 1913 birthplace of President Richard Nixon, whose presidential library sits on the family homestead.

About Yorba Linda
Also known as. Land of Gracious Living (the official city motto and longtime nickname). Yorba Lindan (the demonym for residents).
History. The name blends Yorba, for the early Spanish land-grant family descended from expedition member Jose Antonio Yorba, and Linda, meaning pretty in Spanish. In 1907 former Yorba lands were sold to the Janss Investment Corporation, which subdivided the property and named the new town Yorba Linda; the first citrus groves were planted in 1910. Richard Milhous Nixon was born in Yorba Linda on January 9, 1913, and his family moved to Whittier when he was nine. Agriculture, chiefly citrus, drove the local economy into the 1920s before the town grew into a residential community; Yorba Linda incorporated as a city in 1967.
Local economy. Savi Ranch, named for the Santa Ana Valley Irrigation company, is the main commercial district, packed with retailers, auto dealers, restaurants, hotels and offices. Costco is among the largest local employers (roughly 298 workers), alongside dental-implant maker Nobel Biocare and Euroline Steel Windows. John Force Racing, the operation of 16-time NHRA Funny Car champion John Force, is headquartered at Savi Ranch. Retail centers include Yorba Linda Town Center (opened 2019, anchored by Bristol Farms), Eastlake Village and Packing House Square, reflecting a service and retail economy.
Culture and community. Yorba Linda Fiesta Days, an annual community festival and parade in the Old Town area, dates to 1967, the year the city incorporated. The city retains a strong equestrian heritage, with about 30 horse trails totaling more than 100 miles. Main Street's historic district and Merchants' Association (founded 1992) host craft fairs, pet expos and seasonal celebrations. The Cultural Arts Center (opened 2020) and Yorba Linda Spotlight Theater Company, a youth theater nonprofit, support local performing arts.
What makes Yorba Linda distinct. Yorba Linda is the only city in Orange County that is the birthplace of a U.S. president. The Savi Ranch commercial area straddles the Yorba Linda-Anaheim line, so its Home Depot technically sits in Anaheim despite being marketed as part of Savi Ranch. In 2004 the city council rejected a proposed Metrolink commuter-rail station, keeping Yorba Linda one of the larger California cities without direct rail transit.
