About Yuba City
Also known as. Prune Capital of the World. Prune Capital of California. Chhota Punjab / Little Punjab (informal, for its large Punjabi-Sikh community).
History. The Maidu people inhabited the region before Spanish and Mexican expeditions arrived in the early era of exploration. One account holds the name 'Yuba' derives from the Spanish 'uva' (grape), after wild grapes seen growing along a river. The land was part of a Mexican grant to John Sutter, who sold a tract to men who founded a town at the Feather-Yuba confluence to serve gold-rush miners headed upstream. By 1852 Yuba City was a steamboat landing with a hotel, grocery, post office and about 20 homes and 150 people. Voters made Yuba City the permanent Sutter County seat in 1856; Sutter County was one of California's original 27 counties, incorporated February 18, 1850.
Local economy. Agriculture anchors the economy, with rice the leading crop plus cling peaches, plums and prunes, walnuts, almonds and tomatoes. Sutter County is the top peach-producing county in California and the United States, specializing in the cling variety. Sunsweet Growers Incorporated operates the world's largest dried-fruit processing plant in the city.
Culture and community. The Punjabi Sikh community traces to farmers who arrived from northern India in the early 1900s and grew into one of the largest such communities outside India. The Nagar Kirtan Sikh parade, inaugurated in 1980 by Didar Singh Bains, is among the largest South Asian festivals outside the subcontinent, drawing roughly 100,000-plus (a 2025 estimate put crowds near 200,000), with families giving away an estimated 200,000 to 250,000 free meals. The Tierra Buena Sikh Temple (Gurdwara), established in 1969, serves tens of thousands of area Sikhs. Nearby Marysville hosts the Bok Kai Festival and Parade, billed as California's oldest continuous parade, running since 1880 and rooted in the Chinese immigrant community.
What makes Yuba City distinct. Rand McNally's 1985 'Places Rated Almanac' ranked Yuba City the worst U.S. metro to live in, faulting it for lacking a four-year college, an arts center, a sports team, an interstate and public transit, though it scored well on climate and crime. The town answered the insult with a mock funeral in which car dealers burned Rand McNally maps and drove the ashes in an urn to the publisher's San Francisco headquarters, and it later launched a Prune Festival. At the Sikh parade, community families cook and give away hundreds of thousands of free meals to strangers each year.
