Perched on the Colorado River at the corner where Arizona, California, and Mexico meet, Yuma holds the Guinness World Record as the sunniest city on Earth and grows most of the winter lettuce Americans eat. A frontier river crossing turned military and agricultural powerhouse, it swells each winter with 'snowbird' visitors escaping the cold. Its trio of agriculture, military, and tourism defines the local identity.

About Yuma
Also known as. Sunniest City on Earth. Winter Lettuce Capital of the World.
History. The Yuma Crossing, a natural narrowing of the Colorado River roughly 1,000 feet wide, made it a key passage; Spanish expeditions recognized its value as early as 1540. The U.S. Army established Fort Yuma on the California side around 1850-1852; a settlement called Arizona City grew on the Arizona bank and was renamed Yuma in 1873. The Yuma Territorial Prison opened in 1876, and the Yuma Project (authorized in 1904) plus Laguna Dam (completed 1909, the first dam on the Colorado River) launched large-scale irrigated agriculture and ended the steamboat era. Yuma was formally incorporated as a city in 1914.
Local economy. Yuma's economy rests on three pillars: agriculture, the military, and tourism. Yuma County grows over 175 crop types and supplies roughly 90% of North America's leafy greens from November through March; agriculture pumps billions of dollars into the local economy annually. Marine Corps Air Station Yuma is the top employer with more than 5,500 workers, and the Army's Yuma Proving Ground is another major installation. Yuma Regional Medical Center and the Yuma Union High School District are leading civilian employers, and winter tourism dramatically swells the seasonal population.
Culture and community. Yuma Lettuce Days celebrates the winter vegetable harvest in late winter, and the Yuma Medjool Date Festival honors the locally grown dates. Martha's Gardens Medjool Date Farm, founded in 1990, is famous for its creamy Medjool date shakes. The Yuma Jaycees Silver Spur Rodeo (running since the 1940s) and the Yuma County Fair are longstanding annual events, and the region's border-influenced Sonoran and Mexican food is a local staple. On New Year's Eve the city has dropped a giant head of iceberg lettuce from a tower in a farm-country twist on the Times Square ball drop.
What makes Yuma distinct. Guinness World Records lists Yuma as the sunniest place on Earth, with sunshine roughly 90% of daylight hours; it is also the driest and least humid populated place in the contiguous United States. Snow has fallen only once in recorded history, on December 12, 1932, while the all-time high reached 124 degrees Fahrenheit in 1995. The classic Western '3:10 to Yuma' (1957 and 2007 films, from an Elmore Leonard short story) takes its title from the train that delivers an outlaw to Yuma Territorial Prison. Labor and civil rights leader Cesar Chavez was born near Yuma in 1927, and UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is a Yuma native.
