About Zilwaukee
History. Dr. Daniel H. Fitzhugh purchased land near the Saginaw River and settled the area in 1835, before the village existed. Founded in 1848 when brothers Daniel and Solomon Johnson, from New York City, built a sawmill on the Saginaw River south of Fitzhugh's property. The Johnson brothers built a plank road to East Saginaw using lumber from their mill. Zilwaukee Township was organized on January 20, 1854. The name was originally spelled 'Zilwaukie' and did not become 'Zilwaukee' until the late 1800s. Population peaked around 2,201 in 1980 and has since declined to 1,534 at the 2020 census.
Local economy. Founded on the lumber and sawmill industry that dominated the Saginaw Valley in the mid-1800s. The Johnson brothers' plank road to East Saginaw made the village an early transport link for milled lumber. Now a small residential city within the Saginaw metropolitan area rather than an industrial center. Operates under a council-manager form of government.
