ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews Each Follow Different Citation Rules

Three AI platforms now control most of the answers your potential customers read before they ever visit your website. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews do not work the same way, and they do not pull from the same sources. A strategy that gets you cited on one platform can leave you completely invisible on another.

A CiteLens study published July 8, 2026, ran 320 real buyer queries through ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, and Google AI Mode, then compared every source each engine cited. The finding was direct: there is no single "AI SEO." Each platform follows its own citation logic, and only some of them care about your Google ranking at all.

Why This Matters for Your Business Right Now

Over a third of consumers now start their searches with AI instead of Google. The Previsible 2026 State of AI Discovery Report, published July 6, 2026, and covered by Search Engine Land, found that ChatGPT-driven referral traffic grew 12.8x over a 19-month window across 6.77 million tracked sessions. Google AI Overviews now appear on a large share of all searches. When these platforms answer a question, they cite a small handful of sources. Everyone else is invisible.

The traffic that does arrive from AI platforms converts at unusually high rates. Visitors from Perplexity, for example, convert at roughly 11 times the rate of traditional organic search traffic, according to a 2026 analysis. Being cited matters more than most business owners currently realize.

How Each Platform Actually Works

Think of these three platforms as three different buyers walking into your store, each with a completely different decision-making style.

Google AI Overviews

Google AI Overviews pull heavily from Google's own search index. The CiteLens study found that Google AI Mode drew 93% of its citations from Google's top-10 organic results. This means classic SEO work, fast load times, mobile responsiveness, clean site structure, and strong backlinks, still earns you a seat at this table. However, the overlap between AI Overviews and AI Mode from the same search session is surprisingly low: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode cite the same URLs only 13.7% of the time, despite reaching similar conclusions.

Perplexity

Perplexity performs a live web search for every single query. There is no knowledge cutoff. New content can be cited within hours of being indexed. The CiteLens study found Perplexity drew 89% of its citations from Google's top-10 organic results, so SEO still matters here. What sets Perplexity apart is its love of fresh content and community platforms. Among Perplexity's top citation sources, Reddit accounts for a dominant share. Perplexity also averages the highest number of citations per response of any major AI platform, making it more likely to include smaller or newer sources.

ChatGPT

ChatGPT is the platform that surprises most business owners. The CiteLens study found that ChatGPT pulled only 30% of its citations from Google's top-10 results. For ChatGPT, 70% of the sources it recommended ranked in neither Google's nor Bing's top-10. Traditional SEO rank has almost no correlation with ChatGPT citations. What does matter is entity authority: consistent, recognized brand presence across the entire web. Within ChatGPT's top citation sources, Wikipedia accounts for nearly half of citations among leading sources. ChatGPT's live web search feature uses Bing's index as its primary source. If you have ignored Bing Webmaster Tools, you are invisible to ChatGPT's live search regardless of how well you rank on Google.

The Overlap Problem

Here is the number that should change how you plan your content: only 11% of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity, according to an analysis of 680 million citations. A brand that appears consistently in Google AI Overviews may be completely invisible in Perplexity or ChatGPT. Treating all three platforms as one channel is the most common and most costly mistake small business owners make with AI visibility right now.

What Small Business Owners Should Do

You do not need a massive budget or a full-time marketing team to improve your odds across all three platforms. Focus on these actions in order:

  • Check your robots.txt file today. Blocking GPTBot, PerplexityBot, or ClaudeBot shuts off your visibility on those platforms entirely. If you use Cloudflare, verify it has not automatically blocked AI crawlers on your behalf.
  • Add your site to Bing Webmaster Tools. ChatGPT's live search runs through Bing's index. Submitting your sitemap there is a fast, free step most small business sites skip.
  • Lead every service page with a direct answer. Research from Princeton found that placing a concise, self-contained answer in the opening paragraph can improve citation likelihood by up to 115%. Write your intro as if an AI might quote it word for word.
  • Add an FAQ section to your main service pages. Structured Q&A format helps all three platforms extract and present your content cleanly.
  • Keep content fresh. Pages updated within the last 30 days receive significantly more citations from Perplexity than older material. A simple quarterly refresh of your top pages makes a real difference.
  • Build brand mentions beyond your own website. Appear in third-party sources your community trusts: local news sites, industry directories, Google Business Profile reviews, and relevant online forums. AI systems synthesize signals from across the web, not just from your domain.
  • Use consistent business information everywhere. Your name, address, phone number, and service descriptions should match across your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, and any directory listings. Inconsistency confuses AI systems trying to verify who you are.

SEO Is Not Dead, But It Is Not Enough Alone

Strong traditional SEO still earns you citations from Google AI Overviews and Perplexity. But it barely moves the needle for ChatGPT. And simply ranking on Google no longer guarantees you appear in AI-generated answers at all. The share of Google AI Overview citations coming from top-10 organic pages dropped from 76% to 38% over an eight-month period in Ahrefs data. The rules changed quietly, and many small business websites have not caught up.

The good news is that the businesses taking these steps now build an advantage that gets harder for competitors to close over time. The earlier you start, the further ahead you get.
