The Short Answer First
On June 3, 2026, Google launched a dedicated Generative AI performance report inside Google Search Console. For the first time, small business owners can see how often their pages show up inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separate from regular organic search data. This is the biggest Search Console change for AI visibility since Google Overviews launched, and it changes how you should think about your content.
What Changed and Why It Matters
Before this update, AI impression data was buried inside your overall Performance report with no way to separate it from standard blue-link traffic. If your site was being cited inside an AI Overview, you had no official way to confirm it. You had to guess using third-party tools.
That gap is now closed, at least partly. The new report gives you a standalone view of your AI-driven impressions across three Google surfaces:
- AI Overviews in Search
- AI Mode in Search
- Generative AI features in Discover
You can filter the data by page, country, device, and date range, from hourly all the way to monthly. This is the first time site owners have had native Google data showing AI visibility as its own line item rather than something buried in aggregate numbers.
What the Report Does NOT Show Yet
Be careful not to over-read the data. The report currently shows impressions only. It does not show clicks, click-through rate, or the specific search queries that triggered your AI appearances. You can see that your pages are surfacing inside AI features, but you cannot yet see whether those appearances are driving anyone to your site.
A few other limits worth knowing:
- Historical data only goes back to around mid-May 2026. There is no retroactive AI impression history before that date.
- The rollout started with a subset of sites, beginning in the United Kingdom. If you do not see a "Generative AI" tab under Performance in your Search Console account, you are not alone. Google is expanding access after testing.
- The report covers Google Search only. It tells you nothing about your visibility inside ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, or Gemini as a standalone product.
The Opt-Out Toggle: Should You Use It?
Alongside the new report, Google added a toggle that lets you remove your content from AI Overviews, AI Mode, and generative AI features in Discover. Google confirmed this control does not affect your standard organic search rankings. Opting out is purely about AI surfaces.
For most small businesses, opting out is the wrong move. Being cited inside an AI Overview can increase your click-through rate compared to pages that are not cited at all. The goal should be getting in, not getting out. The opt-out is most useful for businesses in sensitive industries where AI-generated summaries might misrepresent their services, or for publishers with strict content licensing concerns.
What This Means for Your Content Strategy Right Now
Here is the practical shift this report forces: you can no longer ignore whether your pages are appearing in AI features. Appearing inside an AI Overview is quickly becoming the new first position. If a potential customer types a question into Google and your competitor gets cited in the AI summary while your site does not appear at all, you have already lost that moment.
The content habits that earn AI citations are not complicated, but they require discipline:
- Put a direct, clear answer near the top of every page. AI systems pull short, quotable answers, not long introductions.
- Use descriptive headings that match the questions your customers actually ask. Each section should be useful on its own.
- Keep key facts accurate and up to date. Stale or vague information is less likely to earn a citation.
- Build topical authority by covering your area of expertise in depth, not surface-level posts that look like dozens of others.
- Make sure your site is technically clean: fast load times, mobile-friendly design, and a crawlable structure help Google and other AI systems read and trust your content.
Generic content is losing ground fast. AI systems can compress many similar articles into one answer, so the business that publishes specific, experience-based, well-structured content has an advantage over one that publishes filler.
How to Find the Report in Your Account
If the report has rolled out to your site, you will find it inside Search Console under Performance, then Search results, with a dedicated Generative AI tab. To access the opt-out control, go to Settings and look for Search Generative AI. Opting out removes your content from AI features starting on the date you apply the toggle, not retroactively.
If you do not see the Generative AI tab yet, check back every few weeks. The wider rollout is ongoing.
Local Businesses Have a Real Opportunity Here
July 2026 also brought another relevant update: Google rolled out Gemini integration inside Google Business Profiles, adding a message button powered by an AI agent so customers can get instant responses directly from your listing. This means your Google Business Profile content is feeding AI-driven interactions, not just standard map results.
For local Michigan businesses, this is a direct call to action: keep your Business Profile information complete, accurate, and consistent with your website. Inaccurate listings can now surface bad answers inside AI-driven conversations, not just wrong map pins.
Your Next Step
Log into Google Search Console today and check whether the Generative AI report has appeared for your account. If it has, look at which pages are earning AI impressions and compare that to your most important service and product pages. If your key pages are not appearing, that is a content and structure problem worth solving now, before the next algorithm adjustment.
