An XML sitemap tells search engines and AI crawlers exactly what content exists on your site and when it was last updated. Without one, crawlers must discover pages through internal links alone -- which often misses important content.

What to Include

  • All indexable pages (pages you want to rank)
  • Last modification dates (accurate, not auto-generated)
  • Change frequency (how often the page typically updates)
  • Priority (relative importance within your site)

What to Exclude

  • Pages with noindex tags
  • Redirect pages (include the final destination instead)
  • Paginated archives
  • Private or admin pages
  • Duplicate content pages

Sitemap Submission

Submit your sitemap to Google Search Console and reference it in your robots.txt file. This ensures Google discovers it and processes it regularly.

Sitemaps for AI Discovery

AI crawlers also benefit from well-structured sitemaps. Some businesses create separate AI-focused sitemaps or combine sitemaps with llms.txt files for comprehensive AI discovery.

AppWT generates optimized XML sitemaps for every site we build. See our technical SEO services.
