**This Week in Web and AI**

Google expanded its Generative AI performance report in Google Search Console to a global audience this past week. The report, which began rolling out on August 11, 2026, gives site owners visibility into which pages on their site are generating impressions specifically within Google's generative AI features. The report offers an isolated breakdown of impressions generated within AI Overviews and AI search mode, and supports filtering by URLs, countries, devices, and timeframes -- but currently excludes specific click data or prompt query details. For small business owners who have been wondering whether their content shows up in AI-generated answers, this report is your first real answer.

**Tip You Can Use Today**

Check your Google Search Console account right now for the new Generative AI report under the Performance section. Google has finally separated generative AI visibility from the rest of the data in Search Console, with dedicated Generative AI performance reports for Search and Discover. Here is how to act on what you find:

- Log in to Google Search Console at search.google.com/search-console.
- Look for a pop-up prompt or navigate to Performance, then select the "Generative AI" tab if it appears in your account.
- The Search report shows impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode, along with the URLs that appeared and breakdowns by country, device, and date.
- Sort by impressions to find which pages already appear in AI answers, then review those pages to confirm the content is clear, direct, and answers a specific question in the first two to three sentences.
- Add or strengthen JSON-LD structured data across those high-impression pages, because schema markup gives AI systems explicit context about your products, reviews, and services.

If the tab is not yet in your account, check back daily -- the global rollout is still in progress.

**Tool Worth Knowing**

The free tier of Google Search Console is the tool worth your attention this week, specifically the new Generative AI report within it. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content to be cited by AI search engines -- ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, and Claude -- and as AI systems answer queries directly, GEO is becoming as important as traditional SEO was in the early 2010s. Research suggests that the overlap between top Google links and AI-cited sources has dropped from 70% to below 20%, and this gap is growing as AI systems develop their own preferences for which sources to cite. The Search Console Generative AI report costs nothing, requires no third-party subscription, and puts that data directly in your hands for the first time.
