About Franklin, Indiana
Franklin is the seat of Johnson County, Indiana, about twenty miles south of Indianapolis and ninety north of Louisville, on Interstate 65 and US 31. Its 2020 population of 25,313 caps the fastest growth of these twelve places, roughly doubling since 1990. Home to Franklin College, the city draws regional crowds to college sport and to its arts events, and its motto is Live, Work and Play for a Lifetime.
History of Franklin
- Platted in 1823 and named for Benjamin Franklin, the town gained a post office in 1824 and city status in 1861. Its widest fame came in the 1920s through the Franklin Wonder Five, a group who had played together as boys, led by Fuzzy Vandivier and coached by Ernest Griz Wagner. They became the first high school team to take three consecutive state championships, in 1920, 1921 and 1922, followed Wagner to Franklin College, were titled national college champions in 1923, and turned down a match against the leading professional side, the New York Celtics.
Landmarks and Places in Franklin
- Eleven National Register listings, the densest heritage roll of these twelve: Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Franklin College Library at Shirk Hall, Franklin College-Old Main, the Franklin Commercial Historic District, Franklin Senior High School, Greenlawn Cemetery, the Herriott House, Johnson County Courthouse Square, the Martin Place Historic District, the Masonic Temple now holding the Johnson County Museum of History, and the August Zeppenfeld House. Province Park downtown contains a small burial ground of the George King family, among the city's founding households.
The Franklin Economy
- Toyota, NSK, KYB and Mitsubishi all run operations in the city, and Franklin has worked deliberately at those international links; it has been twinned with Kuji in Iwate, Japan since October 1960 and with Luqiao in China since April 2010. The first Ritters Frozen Custard opened here before franchising elsewhere. An earlier motor industry is recorded but carries a circular reference tag dated February 2021 and is therefore reported as the article's attributed claim only: that the Indiana Motor and Manufacturing Company built the Continental marque from 1910 to 1913 and the Martindale and Millikan from 1914 to 1915, with the Whitesides truck also made here between 1910 and 1914.
Community Life in Franklin
- Franklin College, founded in 1834, was the first college in Indiana to admit women. The restored Artcraft Theatre is owned by Franklin Heritage Inc., formed by residents in the 1980s and turning it into a community venue for film and art. Immediately west stands the 1936 Colonial Revival former post office, designed by Louis A. Simon and once home to a WPA mural by local artist Jean Swiggett, later moved to the newer post office. The Daily Journal covers the city and county. Life magazine devoted a photo essay to the city on 2 December 1940, Bernard Hoffman's A Small Town's Saturday Night, following the Dunn farming family through a haircut, a film at the Artcraft, the drugstore and Nick's Candy Kitchen, its best-known frame showing double-parked cars and crowds on Jefferson Street; the critic James Guimond later argued the magazine had chosen an idealised small town for its readers, a reading attributed to him rather than asserted here.
