About Anchorage, Kentucky

History of Anchorage

  • The ground under Anchorage came out of Isaac Hite's 1773 land grant, which handed most of present-day Jefferson County to Virginia militia officers as payment for service in the French and Indian War, and part of that original grant now holds Central State Hospital and E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park. Early maps label the spot Hite's Mill, and it was also known as Hobbs Station. The Louisville and Frankfort Railroad, later bought by the Louisville and Nashville, was pushed through in 1849, and an interurban line arriving in 1901 shortened the trip to Louisville and to neighboring towns. The city incorporated in 1878 and took its name from The Anchorage, the estate of riverboat captain James W. Goslee, chosen to honor him three years after his death. Heavy tree cover kept summer temperatures noticeably below those downtown, which turned the place into a summer-home district for well-off Louisvillians; brewing figure Isaac Wolfe Bernheim, remembered locally for his philanthropy, was one of them, and in 1914 he commissioned the Frederick Law Olmsted firm to draw a plan for the town using stone bridges and triangular intersections in the manner of Olmsted's Louisville park work. Large old estates have largely been subdivided since 1977, with new houses built on the resulting lots.

Landmarks and Places in Anchorage

  • The Anchorage Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and the article maintains a separate list of National Register listings within the city. At the center of town, tradition holds that an anchor hanging inside the rim of a locomotive wheel was taken by Captain Goslee from his ship, the Matamora, which is the physical emblem behind the nautical name. The restored interurban rail station and the historic buildings around the city center date from the modern preservation work described in the article. Part of Isaac Hite's original grant now underlies E. P. "Tom" Sawyer State Park and Central State Hospital, and the 1914 Olmsted plan left stone bridges and triangular intersections as its physical signature.

The Anchorage Economy

  • Anchorage's published economic story is residential and preservationist rather than commercial. Rail set the pattern first, with the 1849 Louisville and Frankfort line and the 1901 interurban making the town commutable, and Interstate 265 doing the same job now. Papa John's Pizza founder John Schnatter is described in the article as a resident who owns about 6 percent of the land in Anchorage, including much of the city center, and who restored an interurban rail station and three historic buildings, built a fourth in matching style, and stated that his goal was purely to preserve the city's character. Public safety is handled in-house by the Anchorage Police Department, a round-the-clock agency with ten full-time sworn officers certified by the Commonwealth, with fire and EMS coverage from Anchorage-Middletown Fire and EMS. The article reports no industries, employers or workforce figures, and none are asserted here.

Community Life in Anchorage

  • Schooling is the town's most distinctive institution: almost all of Anchorage is zoned to Anchorage Public School, a K-8 school of the small Anchorage Independent Schools district whose boundaries nearly match the city limits, and district residents may then attend Jefferson County Public Schools or Oldham County Schools for high school, with a very small portion zoned to JCPS for the full K-12 span. That leaves a city of 2,500 people running its own school district inside a metro of nearly 783,000. The Anchorage Trail, a 2.1-mile walking path, opened in June 2008. Notable people connected to the town include writer George Madden Martin, who published under the pen name of Mrs. Attwood R. Martin, Yum! Brands chief executive David C. Novak, singer-songwriter Joan Osborne, silent film star Virginia Pearson, and John Schnatter.
