History of Burlington

• Burlington began as 74 acres donated by John Craig and Robert Johnson at the headwaters of Allen's Fork, and passed through three names: Craig's Camp for its founder, Wilmington from 1800, and Burlington from 1816 at the request of the U.S. Post Office. The town was platted in 1801, the same year court began sitting in a log courthouse. County surveyor Moses Scott laid the streets in circles around a central Publick Square, and it was that original plan and square that later carried the Burlington Historic District onto the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. The place was incorporated in 1824, but its city charter was annulled in 1923, so it is unincorporated today. That leaves Burlington as one of only two county seats in Kentucky without incorporation, the other being Whitley City, seat of McCreary County.
