About Dayton, Kentucky
History of Dayton
- A ferry crossing was established in this area by the early 19th century, at the foot of what is now Dayton Pike.
- Two separate cities, Jamestown and Brooklyn, incorporated separately in 1848 and 1849, were merged and reincorporated in 1867 under the name Dayton in honor of the Ohio town of the same name. The 1867 merger is cited to Clarke's Cincinnati, the Queen City, 1788-1912, Volume 2, page 533, and the naming to a Preserve America page.
- Jamestown was incorporated on March 1, 1848. The article says that according to the state charter the founding fathers were James Berry, James McArthur and Henry Walker, and that Berry was a nephew of James Taylor, Jr., the founder of Newport, Kentucky.
Landmarks and Places in Dayton
- Four National Register of Historic Places listings sit in Dayton according to the Campbell County NRHP list, read from wikitext because the plain-text extract drops them entirely: Dayton City Hall, reference number 100007373, at 636 6th Ave., listed January 21, 2022; Dayton High School, reference number 85001579, at 8th and Walnut Sts., listed July 18, 1985, whose list image is captioned as now being Schoolhouse Flats; Doyle Country Club, reference number 100000735, listed March 13, 2017; and Terrace Gardens, reference number 100009534, at 1300 Dayton Avenue.
- The Doyle Country Club, also called Doyle's Country Club or the Doyle Club and formerly Clark's Grove, is a privately owned club on the Mary Ingles Highway, Kentucky Route 8. Its article describes a dance pavilion built in 1921 and 16 cabins on a beachfront property on the Ohio River shore, and states it is the last surviving river camp community along the Ohio River Valley. The club was incorporated in Dayton in 1919 but its article says it had already been active for several years. The Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board under the Kentucky Heritage Council advanced its National Register nomination in 2016.
- Dayton High School, where John Wooden began his coaching career, survives as a National Register listing at 8th and Walnut Sts.
The Dayton Economy
- The article's economic content is largely historical. It names the Wadsworth Watch Case Co. as a former plant whose garages sheltered residents during the 1937 flood, and attributes the departure of many of the town's companies to the floods of 1884, 1913 and 1937.
- The article describes ongoing downtown revitalization work and a historical survey intended as a first step toward creating a historic district, in a sentence carrying an undated 'when' tag.
- No current employer, industry mix or business roster is given in the source, and none is invented here.
Community Life in Dayton
- At the 2020 census the article gives a median age of 38.1 years, with 23.1% of residents under 18 and 14.2% aged 65 or over, and a ratio of 98.7 males per 100 females.
- The article records that 100.0% of residents lived in urban areas and 0.0% in rural areas.
