About Irvine, Kentucky
Irvine is the county seat of Estill County, Kentucky, a home rule-class city of 2,360 people at the 2020 census sitting in the middle of the county on the northeast bank of the Kentucky River, with Ravenna adjoining it to the southeast. Ground elevation is 679 feet, two ZIP codes serve it, 40336 and 40472, and the telephone area code is 606. General Green Clay laid the town out on twenty and a half acres of his own land in January 1812, and the name honours Colonel William Irvine, a pioneer settler of Madison County, from which Estill had been split four years earlier. The rendered page opens with two competing local pronunciations, and the two published statements of the city's size do not agree with each other.
History of Irvine
- The town is older than its incorporation by thirty-seven years. General Green Clay established it on 28 January 1812 on 20.5 acres of his land, four years after Estill County was separated from Madison County, and it took the name of Colonel William Irvine, whom Gannett's 1905 place-name compilation identifies as a pioneer settler of Madison County. A post office followed in 1813 and the state legislature incorporated the city in 1849. The census series therefore begins well before the charter, at 91 in 1830, which makes this a series whose start point sits between the town's founding and its incorporation rather than at either. It is also a series full of holes: 1840, 1850, 1880 and 1890 are simply not in the table, four missing readings rather than a late beginning. What is in the table is one of the sharpest single-decade changes in this batch. Irvine stood at 272 in 1910 and at 2,705 in 1920, very close to a tenfold rise in ten years, and the article offers no cause for it anywhere in its text. The peak arrives immediately after, 3,640 in 1930, and every reading since has come in below the one before it with a single exception: 3,631 in 1940, 3,259 in 1950, 2,955 in 1960, 2,918 in 1970, 2,889 in 1980, 2,836 in 1990, then 2,843 in 2000, which is a rise of seven, and back to 2,715 in 2010 and 2,360 in 2020.
Landmarks and Places in Irvine
- Irvine Historic Business District - listed on the National Register on 2 August 2000, reference number 00000866, covering seven acres roughly at the junction of Kentucky Route 52 and Kentucky Route 89, with 28 contributing buildings and four non-contributing buildings and sites, and its architecture recorded as Late Victorian and Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvine_Historic_Business_District).
- Estill County Courthouse, 1939 - named as a component of the historic district (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvine_Historic_Business_District).
- Wallace Hotel, now the Citizens Voice & Times, built 1922 at 108 Court Street - a district component that has outlived its original use (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvine_Historic_Business_District).
The Irvine Economy
- Two employers are named and no more. Carhartt is listed as a major employer, sourced to a state community profile for Irvine and Estill County, and Mercy Health Partners is recorded as the operator of Marcum and Wallace Memorial Hospital in the city. Both references are dead links carried with archive copies, so the statements are attributed to their sources as they stood rather than presented as current. The article gives no employment count, no industry breakdown and no commuting figures at any point. The external links do point at an Estill Development Alliance site and an Estill County Water District, which is the whole of the article's economic infrastructure content. Earnings and hardship percentages from the 2000 tables are off-limits here, noted and skipped.
Community Life in Irvine
- The city's cultural anchor is not in the body text at all. The Mountain Mushroom Festival appears only as an external link with its own domain, never described in a sentence, so a reader skimming the article's prose would never learn the town holds one. Two more pieces of the place survive only in image captions, which the plain-text version discards outright: both panorama photographs of the city are credited as taken from atop Rockhouse Mountain, a name that appears nowhere else in the article. Institutionally the town has the Estill County Public Library, listed as a lending library in the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives directory, and Estill County Schools, which includes Estill County High School. The Notable people section holds exactly one name, the actor and musician Harry Dean Stanton, whose six-decade run of supporting parts stretched from Cool Hand Luke in 1967 to lead roles in Paris, Texas in 1984 and Lucky in 2017; how he attaches to this city specifically is set out under quirks.
