About Irvington, Kentucky

Irvington is a home rule-class city in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, holding 1,231 residents at the 2020 census on 0.88 square miles of ground that the census bureau records as entirely dry. It sits at 620 feet, or 189 metres, uses the 40146 ZIP code and the 270 and 364 area codes, and unlike most of Kentucky's east it keeps Central rather than Eastern time. The city is a railroad creation of the late 1880s and takes its name, at one remove, from Irvington in New York state. Its commercial core is a National Register historic district, and its climate is classified humid subtropical, Cfa on the Koppen scale, with hot humid summers and mild to cool winters.

History of Irvington

  • The post office came first and under a different name entirely. It opened on 16 February 1885 as Merino, after the nearby Mt. Merino Seminary. Then two local businessmen, R.M. Jolly and Edgar L. Bennett, worked out where the Louisville, St. Louis, and Texas Railroad was going to run, bought 315 acres of farmland on the spot, and platted a whole new town across the winter of 1888 and 1889 with the railroad's own workforce helping. The name they chose was not local at all. It honours Irvington, New York, which was the hometown of the railroad's chief engineer, Eugene Cornwall, so a Breckinridge County town carries a Hudson Valley place name because of where one engineer grew up. The state assembly incorporated it in 1889. One later move is recorded in detail: in 1933 the Holy Guardian Angel Roman Catholic church was relocated from nearby Mount Merino to High Street in Irvington, the reason given being that the Mount Merino building needed too many repairs and the congregation wanted to be nearer the population centre. The decennial series runs unbroken from 1900 to 2020 with no missing decade anywhere in it, thirteen readings starting at the first census after the town was platted, which is a legitimate start point and not a hole: 385, 665, 655, 764, 790, 831, 1,190, 1,300, 1,409 at the 1980 peak, then 1,180, 1,257, 1,181 and 1,231.

Landmarks and Places in Irvington

  • Irvington Historic District - listed on the National Register on 29 June 1998, reference number 97001342, covering 12.6 acres roughly bounded by the CSX tracks and Third, Caroline and Walnut Streets. It counts 20 contributing buildings, 12 contributing structures and three contributing sites, against fourteen non-contributing buildings and one non-contributing site, and the nomination gives a build date of 1888 with Early Commercial and Late 19th and Early 20th Century American Movements architecture (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvington_Historic_District_(Irvington,_Kentucky)).
  • The United States Post Office inside the historic district - noted in the nomination as one of the contributing properties (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvington_Historic_District_(Irvington,_Kentucky)).
  • Holy Guardian Angel Roman Catholic church, High Street - moved here from Mount Merino in 1933 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irvington,_Kentucky).

The Irvington Economy

  • No economy section exists and no employer, industry or commuting content appears anywhere in the article, so nothing of that sort is asserted. The economic character the sources do carry is historical and comes from the National Register nomination for the town centre, which found the district significant as the most cohesive group of early commercial buildings forming one of Breckinridge County's most prosperous railroad towns, and noted that the town continues to thrive. That is the nomination's own wording, quoted rather than adopted. The district's fabric backs the description: most of its buildings are one- and two-storey brick, and a United States Post Office stands among the contributing properties. The founding story is itself economic, a speculative land purchase of 315 acres placed deliberately in front of an approaching rail line. The 2000 tables' money columns are barred from this record; the bar is stated, the numbers are not.

Community Life in Irvington

  • The single institution the article names is a public library, a branch of the Breckinridge County Public Library, listed in the state library directory. Religious life enters only through the 1933 relocation of Holy Guardian Angel church from Mount Merino. The most unexpected entry is a section titled In popular culture, which records that Irvington, together with neighbouring Brandenburg and Ekron, appears in the open-world survival horror game Project Zomboid from its Build 42 release, and that other Kentucky places including West Point, Muldraugh and Louisville had already served the game as core locations. That whole section carries no citation of any kind, which is a weaker position than a section flagged as needing more, and it is reported here strictly as what the article states. The town also keeps a climate paragraph, uncommon among Kentucky city articles of this size, giving hot humid summers, mild to cool winters and a Koppen classification of Cfa.
