About Jamestown, Kentucky
Jamestown is the seat of Russell County, Kentucky, a home rule-class city that counted 1,867 residents at the 2020 census. It sits at 978 feet, keeps Central time, uses ZIP code 42629 and the 270 and 364 area codes, and the 2020 census classed all of its population as rural. The Russell County courthouse in the town is the article's lead image, and the Masonic hall on Public Square is on the National Register. Its name has a short and pointed political history behind it, and the two published statements of its size differ by two thirds, which is the widest area disagreement across this whole batch.
History of Jamestown
- The town was laid out in 1826 as the seat of the newly formed Russell County, and its first name was Jacksonville, for General Andrew Jackson. The timing is the point. Jackson had taken a plurality of the popular vote in the 1824 presidential election and then lost the run-off in the House of Representatives, an outcome the article attributes to the corrupt bargain struck between Henry Clay and John Quincy Adams. Within the same year an anti-Jacksonian party loyal to Clay took power in Kentucky, and when the post office opened in November it opened as Jamestown, named instead for James Wooldridge, a local landowner who with his brother John had given 110 acres for the town. The act of the state legislature incorporating the city that December kept the new name, and it has held ever since. So a town honouring Andrew Jackson lost that honour to state politics inside a single year, while a hundred and thirty miles east another Kentucky county seat took his name and kept it. The census record starts late and then loses a decade: nothing before 1870, which is forty-four years after the town was established, then 138 in 1870, 121 in 1880, 154 in 1890, and no 1900 reading at all before 177 in 1910. From there it runs 237, 410, 476, then jumps to 1,064 in 1950 and falls back to 792 in 1960, a drop of more than a quarter that the article nowhere explains. The later readings recover steadily: 1,027, 1,441, 1,641, 1,624, 1,794 and 1,867.
Landmarks and Places in Jamestown
- Russell Lodge No. 284, also called the Jamestown Masonic Lodge, on Public Square - a two-storey stone building put up in 1939 and listed on the National Register in 1994, with an open area of 30 by 50 feet on its second floor and a ground floor renovated in 2019 (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Lodge_No._284).
- Russell County courthouse - the building in the article's only photograph, captioned as the courthouse in Jamestown (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown,_Kentucky).
- The Russell County Public Library branch - the one institution the city article names (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown,_Kentucky).
The Jamestown Economy
- There is no economy section and no employer, industry or commuting content, so none is asserted. Two grounded commercial facts reach the record through other articles. The ground floor of the Masonic hall on Public Square was renovated in 2019 and now houses a guitar business, which that article calls world famous, a description reported here as the source's wording rather than adopted as a finding. And the country music station WJRS on 104.9 FM is licensed to Jamestown, serving the Jamestown and Russell Springs area, owned by Lake Cumberland Broadcasters, which also owns WJKY; the two share facilities and a transmitting tower at 2804 South US 127, on the south side of Russell Springs rather than in Jamestown itself. The station signed on 3 September 1966 under Russell County Broadcasters, at 103.1 megahertz, and was sold in 1970 along with its sister station to the station manager Welby Hoover, who moved it to its present frequency and ran it until his death in 1986, after which his wife Mae managed it. The census money columns cannot appear here; that limit is stated once and honoured throughout.
Community Life in Jamestown
- The city article names one institution and one only: a lending library that is a branch of the Russell County Public Library. There is no notable-people section, no festival, no venue and no arts content of any kind, so this record does not manufacture any. What civic life the sources capture arrives through the National Register nomination for the Masonic hall, and it is unusually explicit about why such a building matters. The 1993 nomination argues that in Kentucky, described there as a rural state with limited ethnic diversity, fraternal organisations were the primary secular social group available to men, and that the building is significant today insofar as it helps in understanding the part such civic groups played in the cultural life of localities. That is quoted, not endorsed. The other cultural presence is broadcast rather than built: a country format that has run on the same station without interruption since 1966.
