About Leitchfield, Kentucky

Leitchfield is the county seat of Grayson County, Kentucky, and a home rule-class city whose 2020 census population was 6,404. It stands on the Western Kentucky Parkway where that road meets Kentucky Route 259, with U.S. Route 62 crossing 259 near the middle of town, and it lies between Rough River Lake to the north and Nolin River Lake to the south. Its ground is geologically distinctive: the article places it in the Clifty Area, a sandstone belt usually counted as part of the West Kentucky Coal Field, which separates that coalfield from the limestone-rich Pennyroyal Plateau, and a fault running through brings limestone to or near the surface, with quarries west of town. Elevation is given twice and consistently, 227 metres and 745 feet. The ZIP codes listed are 42726, 42054 and 42755, the telephone area codes 270 and 364, the FIPS code 21-44686 and the GNIS identifier 0496280. Like Ledbetter, it keeps Central Time. Incorporation by the state assembly is dated 1866. Its population table is the only complete one in this batch, and its Arts and culture section is the only one carrying maintenance tags, so both the best and the weakest evidence in this round sit in the same article.

History of Leitchfield

  • The recorded history is two sentences long and rests on a single nineteenth-century source. The town takes its name from Major David Leitch, described as an aide to General George Washington and as the original owner of much of the land in the county, the town site included, which lay at the eastern end of his holdings; the authority is Lewis Collins, History of Kentucky, 1877, page 293. Formal incorporation by the state assembly followed in 1866. Nothing else about the town's founding, its early settlement or its nineteenth and twentieth centuries appears under that heading, although one substantial historical fact is filed elsewhere, under Education: in 1871 and 1872 a school for Black students operated in the town with support from the Freedmen's Aid Society, a claim carried on a specific page of Marion B. Lucas, A History of Blacks in Kentucky, published by the Kentucky Historical Society in 1992. The census table carries the weight the prose does not. It runs 226 in 1860, 314, 491, 821, 914, 1,053, 1,077, down to 950 in 1930, then 1,146, 1,312, 2,982 in 1960, 2,983 in 1970, 4,533, 4,965, 6,139 in 2000, 6,699 in 2010 and 6,404 in 2020. It begins six years before incorporation and, uniquely in this batch, contains no gaps at all: every decade from 1860 through 2020 is present, seventeen readings in an unbroken run. Two features of its shape deserve stating. The town more than doubled between 1950 and 1960, adding 1,670 people, and then added exactly one person across the whole of the following decade before adding 1,550 more in the 1970s. And the 2010 reading remains the highest yet recorded, with 2020 falling below it.

Landmarks and Places in Leitchfield

  • Court Square Historic District - entered on the National Register on 23 November 1984 under reference 84000288, originally 29 contributing buildings across ten acres, with a boundary increase of half an acre added on 12 January 1988 under reference 87001917. The original nomination was prepared by Mary C. Breeding in September 1984 and came with fifty-one photographs taken that year (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_Square_Historic_District,_Leitchfield).
  • Grayson County Courthouse (1935) - the subject of the city article's lead photograph. The district nomination describes it as a three-storey-plus-attic cubical mass extended north and south by large but slightly shorter wings, with a monumental stone portico carrying Corinthian pilasters, a brick parapet above and a round clock. It held various government and community offices as of 1987, and the 1988 boundary increase reclassified it as a contributing building once fifty years had passed since its construction (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_Square_Historic_District,_Leitchfield).
  • Old Grayson County Jail (1934), 113 East Main Street - described in the nomination as an example of Works Progress Administration public architecture, classical in its design elements with a palladian window and pilasters, and carrying unusual decorative brick and stone patterning across the front facade (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Court_Square_Historic_District,_Leitchfield).

Community Life in Leitchfield

  • Everything in the Arts and culture section is reported as attributed, because the section carries two maintenance tags of its own and one of its sentences carries a third. It has been marked unreferenced since October 2007 and marked promotional since May 2025, and a claim inside it about a 2009 replacement event has been marked as needing a citation since January 2015. On that basis the article says the following. The Twin Lakes National Fiddler Championship is held annually on the Court Square, drawing fiddlers from across the state and region to compete for prize money. The Grayson County Fair begins the week before Labor Day and offers a demolition derby, carnival rides, truck and tractor pulls, field crop contests and a beauty pageant, closing with a Labor Day parade. An ice cream social held on the county square in 1992 has grown into a weekend-long July festival planned and run by the K105 station, with a beauty pageant, rides, games, a mixed doubles tennis tournament and a fireworks display that the section, in its promotional-tagged wording, calls the largest in the area; the display is given a theme each year, with Stars and Stripes Forever and Television Classics named as recent ones. Each July the Grayson County Agricultural Recreation Park hosts the county's 4-H and FFA Ag Fair, with tractor driving contests, homemaker exhibits and sheep, hog, horse, dairy and beef shows. A Memorial Day parade and ceremony takes place on the Saturday before the holiday: hundreds walk from the Leitchfield firehouse to the county square carrying signs bearing the names of local veterans who died in various conflicts, and the ceremony consists of speeches, a roll call of local veterans who died during the previous year and the singing of the national anthem and Amazing Grace, followed by a cookout. Schooling is run by Grayson County Public Schools, which operates Grayson County Middle School, H.W. Wilkey Elementary, Oran P. Lawler Elementary and Grayson County High School, with Leitchfield Christian Academy as a private institution, and the town has a lending library, the Grayson County Public Library.
